Two minutes, two dollars and a cell phone are now all it takes to get an eyeglass prescription.
Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a new app for smart phones that, when combined with a thin, cheap lens, could give cheap and accurate eyeglass prescriptions to smart phone owners. The research could help millions of people around the world see better for less money.
Pretty cool, but I suspect if I could afford a smart phone, I could afford to go get my eyes checked (which I really, really need to do soon).
A bit of new news about that cop that ran a stop sign and smashed into a motorcyclist:
According to police documents, Dunn said he was looking at the mobile data computer in his car at the time, and thought he was idling.
Pardon me, but I’ve seen the video from the dashboard camera. How the hell did this cop not know his vehicle was MOVING and not sitting and idling. In order for a vehicle to be sitting and idling, one would have to either put the thing in park or have one’s foot on the brake pedal. His car moved –at a speed fast enough to leave the motorcyclist in critical condition– for MORE THAN A BLOCK. Really … he thought his car was idling?! WTF?! Someone this unaware of his surroundings and this easily ditracted (to the point of not knowing whether his car is moving or not) does not need to be a cop.
I was giving Mom grief this weekend for her town’s having voted down the idea of having wind turbines supplying them with energy, which leaves them having to buy all their energy needs from the nearest energy-producing big city. She said they didn’t need ugly wind turbines, because they were going to be using geothermal energy. I looked into it. Yes, Texas has great geothermal resources for energy production, but … not in her town or county. Guess they’ll be buying their geothermal energy from the nearest big city that has some to sell (and paying whatever they ask for it). For the record, they will be sorry one of these days that they don’t produce any energy themselves.
While I will agree that school lunches suck, the reason they suck isn’t because of what they are serving. They suck because of the pathetic quality of the food used to make them.
Why are French fries and tater tots counted as vegetables, fruit jello cups and frozen juice bars counted as fruit, and so many grains required that schools have to serve combinations like rice with bread?
Um, french fries and tater tots are considered vegetables, because they ARE vegetables. If potatoes and things made with nothing but potatoes aren’t vegetables, then what are they? Also, if jello cups contain fruit, then yes, they are a serving of fruit … as are frozen juice bars made from actual fruit juice. And what the hell is wrong with having bread with a meal that contains rice?! There isn’t anything inherently wrong with any of these foods, and all of them are perfectly acceptable to serve to kids, so long as the quality is good and they are made from fresh ingredients and not overly processed crap (as they currently are). So yes, school lunches suck and lunchroom cooks need to learn how to cook and not just heat things up, but there isn’t anything wrong with french fries, tater tots, jello cups, frozen fruit juice bars, or eating bread with a meal containing rice.
