Alarmist nonsense. California debt exceeds that of 90% of the nations on earth. They can't even maintain proper road surfaces, let alone implement any techno-fantasy silliness.

So yeah. Plan which fucks everything up. Good plan.

Which is why I expect California to start using them and eventually every state will, because it's such a stupid idea, it's sure to pass.

If they're smart then snipping the wire will make the plate default to just displaying the licence. Or else, you know, it'll be legally just like not having plates at all.

But yeah, if someone is a dick on the road chances are you take their number when they have to stop at lights. If someone parks blocking your drive likewise, you take their number and make a complaint. Same with any potentially criminal situation. No number, big problem.

Come to that, what about all those parking permits which are displayed in the window and specify the licence plate of the car they're for? Have the plates disappear and how do people check they're valid?

Oh see, good point. I hadn't even thought of that scenario. Not to mention, it's obviously going to have to be powered by something with a wire, which could be snipped, rendering the plate number non-existent.

The other thing I thought about was all the stop light cameras that can only read the plate due to it's reflective paint. All those would have to be redesigned to photograph a digital display (which doesn't work well as anyone who has tried will tell you).

It's just a stupid, stupid idea all around.

So, when there is a car parked outside the bank and shots have been fired you have to wait for the robbers to come out into the street before you can take the number of the getaway car?

Yeah, bad plan.
