BP’s Big Mess
May 25th, 2010 - 5:42 pm
If you’ve been paying any attention at all to news about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, you’ve likely heard about how there are clouds of droplets of oil under the surface caused by the chemical dispersant BP keeps “dispersing” said oil with. You may even have heard some people saying it’s really awful and the dispersant is actually making the situation worse. Until you see something with your own eyes though, you just can’t get a grasp on what it all means or what they are talking about? Well, this video will open your eyes … and depress you.

Dispersant means to break-up, it doesn’t mean to make it disappear. Fry some bacon in your favorite skillet and you will be left with bacon grease. Place a few drops of your dishwashing detergent in the skillet with some water swish it around and all that was accomplished was you broke-up the grease for easy cleaning. The grease is still there, but now has taken the form of little goblets. Then place that mixture in a glass container and gently rocked it back and forth you’ll notice grease goblets beneath the surface of the water. This exactly what you have in the Gulf as the result of the chemicals BP is using to disperse the oil. I noticed the EPA suggested to BP that they should use a different chemical to disperse the oil, but EPA was unable to provide the name of the chemical. The other news article which hasn’t received much attention lately is the submerged plume of oil that has been caught-up in the Gulf loop that will eventually make its way around the tip of FL into the Atlantic. No one has any idea the size of this plume, where it is, and what exactly will happen when it reaches the Atlantic ocean.
As someone who washes dishes by hand in a sink, I’ve encountered this on a smaller scale. It’s disgusting enough in a sink of water, but in the ocean, well … we’re screwed. We are just totally SCREWED.
