Possum Leftovers

Um … just stepped out on the back stoop to check on the dead possum, and it appears there is now just a squirrel-sized chunk of dead possum remaining. There’s really no telling what manner or number of creatures had nice lunches today. I didn’t hear anything going on in the back yard today, but then it isn’t like I was monitoring the possum corpse or keeping tabs on what might become of it. The fact it has mostly disappeared and is now less of a problem for me is a bonus situation in my eyes. Urban nature at work. I think I’ll wait until morning to deal with the leftovers. Maybe something else will make off with the remainder overnight.

And if the universe wanted me to learn not to procrastinate on things, it continually teaches me the wrong lessons. Had I dealt with the dead possum this afternoon, I would have the negative memory of having had to deal with a large dead possum. I procrastinated, and look … the problem is taking care of itself!

Or maybe the universe is just taking pity on me, because it was the original laundry room possum lying dead out there. I’m not hugely upset about its passing, but Peyton and I have had a few years of history and having to live together. I guess you could say I’d gotten used to him being around. I guess you could also say I feel a little badly about having finally fixed the back door. Had it not been fixed, Peyton would have been able to get to his favorite winter home behind my water heater, and the dogs couldn’t have gotten to him. Though that does assume the dogs killed him. I didn’t get close enough to investigate, and he was quite old for a possum. Only the universe and the next door neighbor’s dogs really know what went down.

Oh well … one less possum. We have others. I’m sure they will annoy me just as much as Peyton did, but at least they won’t be living in my laundry room anymore.

Rest in peace Peyton the Possum!

Or, I suppose, rest in pieces?

  1. It was the vultures! There’s a pair of turkey vultures in our neighborhood. I’d never seen them in the city before but I saw 2 on our street eating a dead possum. :bounce:

  2. I have no idea what ate the thing, but whatever it was, it ate most of it. Oddly, Sasha (our neighborhood outdoor kitty) hasn’t been hungry the last two days, so I think she probably had some possum lunch too.

And we do have vulture here, in the city. Don’t see them often, but every once in a while they are overhead. For all I know they had a feast in my back yard!
