I decided earlier this afternoon that we were having Sonic for dinner. I have been having a terrible craving lately for an extra-long cheese coney, deep fried jalapeƱos, and a cherry-lime slush. This craving, combined with feeling completely lazy about making dinner tonight (or having last night’s leftover stew), means junk food for dinner!
Of course, it’s not as easy as that. Nothing ever is. Due to half our parking spaces being mud pits thanks to all the recent rain, he’s been having to park behind me on the concrete driveway. That means I have to go get the food before he gets home or park in the mud pit myself. Seeing as the last time I parked my truck in the mud pit I nearly got stuck and almost took out the neighbor’s new chainlink fence, probably best I not do that again. So now I am sitting here waiting for Lin to call to tell me he’s getting close to home (coming in from San Antonio during rush hour – you know he’s thrilled), so I can quickly run over to Sonic to get the goodies before he gets to the house.
Speaking of mud pits, I wandered out to look at the garden a little while ago, and the radishes I planted the other day have already come up. So far they are the only things that have sprouted in the most recently planted bed. Well, except for the weeds, of course, which are going completely insane.
I need to make a trellis for the cucumbers and the kidney beans. I don’t know if I’ll get anything from these plants before it gets too cold, but they are growing well, so maybe. Just a few more beans for my seed stockpile would be nice, and it would be really groovy to at least get a taste of the lemon cucumbers. I had no luck with them at all this year, and unless I taste one and find them to be completely fantastic, I can’t say I’ll be bothering to plant them ever again.
I also need to devise a way to protect my beds from freezing temperatures. It will eventually get cold, even though it doesn’t seem like it right now. I’ve seen some people using thin PVC pipe to create low arches over their raised beds, but I don’t want to spend that much money on it. I think I will see if I can’t get bamboo to work in the same way, seeing as I have a ton of the stuff in really, really long lengths. Then all I’ll have to do is cover these frames with plastic and or old blankets when it gets really cold. I might have to get creative, if I can’t get it to bend enough, and that should lead to hilarity worth posting about. My building skills are extremely limited, but everything I have built for the garden –no matter how silly it looks or poorly it’s put together– has managed to serve its intended purpose, and that’s all it needs to do.
Wish Lin would hurry up and call. I’m getting hungry, and I want to get on with our usual nightly activities. In fact, during tonight’s TV news viewing, I am going to make a big push to get that shawl finished. I think I am only four rows from being done, if I want to stop at the smaller version. That would leave me a little over two skeins of that cotton yarn, which should be enough for a matching hat and mitts and maybe a washcloth or two for my mom. Mostly, I just want the thing done with already. The rows are getting very long, and my patience is wearing thin with how miserable I find that yarn to knit with. Also, the weather is just perfect for shawl wearing, so I want to wear it!
Um, yeah … can’t think of anything else to babble about. Guess I’ll go pester the cats for a little while, and then maybe it will be time to go get dinner.
