Dead in the Water

Dead Fish Hat

Finally! I finished the silly hat and can show it to you!

Yes, I am wearing a dead fish on my head. When I saw the pattern in Knitty last winter, I knew I wanted to make one. After I bought that huge supply of cheap acrylic yarn at the thrift store, I finally had enough obnoxious colors to make it the way I wanted to make it. I am positively thrilled with how it turned out. It’s so ridiculous and fun!

Lin is going to hate it, which makes me love it all the more.

A few notes on my version:

The tail portion of the pattern seems to be missing something or maybe I just didn’t understand what it wanted me to do. I just winged it, and it’s OK. I’d do it differently if I make another one, to try to make it look like the one in the pattern photo.

I didn’t have any felt, so I made crocheted rounds for the eyes. Personally, I like it better, even though I didn’t think I would.

I added a few embroidery color dots here and there, and I want to add more. I also wanted to stop working on this hat so I can move on to something else. Therefore, more color dots get added or not at a later date.

I also did the fins a little differently, because I hate following patterns exactly. I can’t help myself.

And no, I am not naked in the photo. I just have a lot of hair. If it makes you feel good to think I am naked in the photo, go right ahead and do so.

  1. “Lin is going to hate it…” Especially when you insist on wearing it to the farmers market in the morning, right?

  2. As soon as it stops being 85ยบ as soon as the sun comes over the horizon, I will so be wearing this to the farmers market, and yes, it will drive Lin insane. He’s tries so hard to not be overly noticeable in public, but I usually blow that for him by wearing silly hats or dancing to the muzak at the grocery store. As long as he’s still laughing while blushing about my being silly, I guess I haven’t pushed it too far.

    And thanks, Randi!

  3. It is adorable!

Wherever I’m at, whenever “Total Eclipse of the Heart” comes on the radio, I sing along and I dance in the grocery store too! :flower:

  4. Now if only it wasn’t a million degrees outside every day and I could wear my silly hat! While dancing in public places! LOL!
