Bed One Planned

Bed One Plan

The plan for Bed One is fairly set in stone now. I’ll be able to plant the carrots and radishes soon, but the rest of the things will have to wait until we aren’t having 100ºF days anymore. Hopefully, the wait will not be too long.

I wasn’t sure what to do with the mounds during the fall/winter season, but I think I have decided to plant some arugula there as soon as the seeds arrive. People in the area say it can stand the heat, and that it does OK in partial shade, so that seems like a good place to put some for now. The potatoes will be going back into the potato bed, and since everyone tells me not to plant fennel by anything else, I think I’ll plant them in the pile of dirt that will be Bed Three next spring all by themselves.

That leaves Bed Two which currently houses my dying tomatoes, peppers, basil, and a few carrots. I’ll probably go nuts on that bed soon and just rip everything out to start fresh after all. It looks like I’ll be putting into that bed those things which will likely die when winter arrives: pole beans, bush beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, and so on. Then when they go, I can plant the lettuces and some more of the other cold weather crops.

I haven’t decided what to do with the pots and planters yet. I suspect I will be moving them back to the front porch, but no idea what to put in them. In fact, I don’t know if I will even use them this season. Now that I have a real garden, I’m not so thrilled with doing containers anymore. I’m sure I’ll find something to put in them … like more Brussels sprouts or lettuce.

So the plan is coming together. Now all I have to do is wait for this freakish summer heat to finally break. Anytime now, Mother Nature!
