Garden Distraction
July 29th, 2009 - 9:35 pm
The anticipation of getting the next season’s garden going is driving me to distraction. I am obsessed with the garden. I was just as eager at the beginning of the year too. I want to get going with it. I want there to be seedlings to watch grow holding the promise of plentiful harvests. I want there to be things to do. I want to be outside puttering for hours and relaxing! Argh!
The waiting really is the hardest part, but there isn’t much to do in the garden right now, due to it being so hot and the end of a growing season. The only real tasks available is ripping up plants, conditioning the dirt, murdering fire ants, and staying on top of the weeds. None of these things are nearly as fun as sticking seeds in the ground and seeing them sprout and grow. It’s all absolutely necessary, but it’s very tedious and boring, especially when it’s so damn hot.
Will summer start ending soon, please?
The only thing I am doing in the garden tomorrow is watering in the morning. Since it’s my watering day, I’ll be giving it a good long drench with the sprinkler. Friday though, I will be going Darwin on the pole beans and dead corn and squash, and likely some more of the tomato plants. I won’t be completely reworking the soil in Bed Two. Probably needs it too, but there isn’t a pear tree trying to spring forth in that bed, and there aren’t any fire ants there either, so I am less than inspired to do all that work. Besides, that would require pulling up all the tomatoes and peppers, and I am not quite ready to give up on the whole lot of them yet.
I tell myself I am not going to do anything in the garden this weekend –not even anything garden related at all– but I know that’s likely a lie. I will probably convince myself to plant some pole beans and cucumbers in Bed Two. I’ve been looking at the funky tomato support system I built, and it will work wonderfully for beans, peas, and cucumbers too. Might as well use it for that, since it’s not supporting any tomatoes anymore. I might even pop some late corn into the Three Sisters mounds. I’ve got the seed, so why not? I also need to get the potatoes into the ground too, so add that to the list of things I swear I am not going to do this weekend.
Well, I’m going to go get comfy on the couch and see if Lin wants to watch last night’s Warehouse 13 or tonight’s leverage. I’ve heard just about enough news for one evening. I feel a talking head induced headache coming on. Must watch fun TV shows and daydream about my wonderful fall and winter garden!
