Ultimate Goal

I didn’t get any of the things I wanted to get done today done. No new skirt to wear to the party tomorrow night. Oh well. I guess I’ll live.

I did deal with the most recent moth invasion somewhat. I certainly didn’t spit shine the cabinets, walls, and floors, but I did sweep, vacuum, and wipe most of it. I must have sucked up 50 months just hanging out on the ceiling and who knows how many eggs and other moth related stuff came out of the pantry. This will just have to do until next week. I simply don’t have the energy or willpower to kill myself today doing what really needs to be done: a complete wash-down of every square inch of the kitchen.

Next week, I am going to start doing something about the kitchen. I have put up with it’s 49 year old awfulness for long enough. Now when I think about the whole “doing something about the kitchen plan” I feel overwhelmed. Wiping it all down, fixing the walls and sealing the ceiling, and then painting it all is going to be a huge task. Ginormous. But if I break it down into little things and just start in one corner, maybe I can eventually get it done. Might take forever, but it’s not going to ever get done if I don’t start on it, right? So come Monday, my kitchen is going to be In Progress for a while. Hopefully not a long while, but we’ll just see how it goes.

The ultimate goal? Whiteness. Floor††, ceiling, cabinets … the whole shebang nothing but white. A blank canvas upon which I intend to express my creativity, not in one fell swoop but over time. Think collage, scribbling with markers, painting, whatever strikes my fancy. Lin will totally hate it, and I don’t care. It is, after all, my kitchen.

But right now, I’m not going to focus on the ultimate goal at all. It’s too big and feels impossible for me to accomplish by myself. For now, I’m just going to pick a corner and get something done, and once there are no more corners to get things done in, the ultimate goal will be accomplished!

Hopefully every last moth or potential moth will be eradicated from my life in the process, without the use of any poisons. Gods, do I hate pantry moths!

And looking ahead, the same process of picking a corner and just starting on it will be applied to the bathroom, though there isn’t much I can really do about that room. It’s a disaster of epic proportions, but maybe it could be an all-white disaster as opposed to a flamingo pink one.

Footnotes
  1. I did get a pattern drafted and some fabric picked out from my stash, so at some point in the future, I will have a new skirt! []
  2. †† I recently found out that vinyl floors can be painted. Something of a pain, but likely less of a pain and cost than trying to replace the many layers of flooring in the kitchen right now. One day we do hope to completely remodel the kitchen, so I don’t want to go too crazy right now. I just want clean, white, and presentable — and functional, of course. []
