The Lowly Potato

The Lowly Potato

I couldn’t resist digging around one of the potato plants I cut back a week or so ago. Well, there was a potato sprouting, so I had to do something!

They won’t win any awards for size or beauty, but I grew ‘em! Considering I started with store bought potatoes of somewhat unknown origin, had problems with disease and pests, did no actual preparation of that plot (it’s just our normal yard dirt), and I had no idea what I was doing, I’m calling the potato experiment a success. I’ll be doing potatoes again, but next time I get proper potato starts.

This is several meals of potatoes for us, so if each plant gives me this much, I’ll be really pleased. Also, I didn’t dig too deeply. It’s too freaking hot out there to be shoveling around in hard dry dirt. Tomorrow after I water, it’ll be much easier to get the shovel to go further than a few inches when I stand on it.

Or maybe I can convince a weightier human to do the digging. Hee hee…
