Not Long Now

Mom just got back from her pre-op appointment. For the moment, the only thing she is freaking out about is the fact the eye drops she had to get cost $78. It restarted the whole “discussion” about my decision she should drop the prescription drug plan from her insurance, which means I had to explain yet again that it makes no sense at all to spend $420 a year to buy the one of two special prescriptions she needs a year when she has some kind of temporary problem. Later tonight or tomorrow, she will go back to being freaked out about the whole eye surgery thing. It’s a pretty big deal for her, seeing as she hasn’t been in a hospital for anything other than to visit since she gave birth to me. She’s allowed to be a little freaked out.

All her paperwork and pre-op tests are done. She’ll be getting the mono-focus lens, set for distance vision. We have to be at the hospital at 10:15 am, and her surgery starts at 11 am. I’ve heard it only takes 30-45 minutes. Then I get to take my likely loopy and eye-patched mother home, where I suspect she will fall directly to sleep from fatigue. I can’t imagine her getting to sleep the night before. She’s already so stressed out about this all she’s barely sleeping.

Not long now! The doctor said she can probably wait to do the second eye, but it’s a decision to be made after the first one is done. If it doesn’t bother her, it can wait. On one of my trips over for her post-op stuff, we’ll be getting her a new lens for her glasses. Then she will officially have better sight in that eye than I do in both of mine. I’m finding myself a little jealous.

The only things left to do now is keep my Mom’s head from exploding due to stress about having her eye worked on and deciding whether or not I want to be in the room while she’s getting it done. Oh yes, I can be right there with a front row seat, and Mom would love to have me there. Personally, I think asking me to be in there while she’s getting her eye operated on would require actions on my part far above and beyond the normal call of duty. I’m not squeamish, but I am pretty sure that is the sort of thing that would give me nightmares. I’m a little touchy about eyes being hurt in any way, and I don’t think I need to see it in person, thank you very much for the offer. :nahnah:
