Snicky-Snacks

To appease the rabble of cats on the issue of the discontinued “snack” around 10 pm every night, which was really more of a third meal than a snack, I spent $3 on a small bag of really nice, healthy, roast-chicken-flavored treats. I was thinking instead of that third (extra) meal I usually get meowed into giving them, we’d have a couple of actual snack treats at 10 pm. We did that with Fuzza when he started getting fat, and he looked forward to snack time with a passion.

I opened the bag a few minutes ago, which naturally attracted all three cats. Thinking I was being nice, I decided to give them each one and familiarize them with the new word “snicky-snack” … which I intend to be the “call” to get their attention.

Tora licked hers and laid down to take a nap by it.

Myu sniffed hers and walked away.

Ronin devoured all three of them, which isn’t saying much about the attractiveness of the products to cats, because he eats everything (including plastic bags, cardboard, and cellophane). He is now sitting by my feet staring at me, likely hoping for another little tidbit, so I guess he liked them slightly better than plastic and cardboard.

I have the feeling the result of this experiment has less to do with the potential tastiness of the snacks and a whole lot to do with slightly fat cats who are never ever actually hungry. I also suspect that repeating this experiment around 11pm tonight, when the bowls have been empty for hours, will lead to an entirely different set of results.

It better lead to different and significantly more positive results, because with that $3 I could have bought two more boxes of frozen deep-fried cream-cheese-stuffed jalapeƱos, which are one of my favorite late-night snicky-snacks. I sacrificed my own personal snicky-snack needs to attempt to make the new diet bearable for the beasts, and they turn their nose up at my offering? Spoiled brats!
