Why Do They Never Work?

The Austin police have shot another suspect. There’s really not much news in that, because contrary to Acevedo’s belief that police shootings are rare here, they tend to happen about every 12-18 months. That doesn’t fit my definition of “rare” in any way, unless the Fourth of July is a “rare” holiday owing to only happening once a year. No, the real story here is this:

Acevedo said of the three patrol cars on the scene at the time of the shooting, one vehicle’s dashboard camera was functioning for a substantial portion of the incident, another was not activated and the third is being reviewed for functionality at this time.

It never seems to fail that when there’s an incident where having video footage from the cop car cameras, said cameras have limited or non-existent functionality, thereby forcing us to believe whatever the police say happened.

And yet again, they are saying the guy “made a furtive movement” to a gun in his waistband, but I’ve heard that tale before and no gun was found, so I’ll be witholding judgement on whether or not the person they shot was even armed at all. Since nearby residents of the apartment complex and other witnesses started throwing rocks and picking fights with the police, it seems to me they feel the situation was poorly handled … and there may be a lot more to the story. Now if only those damn cameras worked we might know what that story is!
