The first planting of bush beans came out of the ground today. There was a moment of panic when I saw they had knots on the roots. I feared root-knot nematodes, but upon researching the issue, these are caused by the nitrogen fixing bacteria normally associated with beans. Phew. Tomorrow I’ll be chopping up and working the roots back into the soil. Free fertilizer for the next batch of beans, which I will be planting in the morning.
There was not a bit of sadness about pulling up the bean plants. They were useless things sitting there not producing anything of worth, and the most fun thing about gardening is sticking seeds in the ground and waiting for them to come up. Once everything in a garden is up and growing, it can get a little tedious and dull. For me anyway. I really like watching seeds turn into plants!
Tomorrow’s gardening plan means getting out there as soon as the sun has lit the sky at all, working the bean roots back into the bean patch, planting the next set of beans, and giving everything a good watering. I’m going to devise a way to use my lawn sprinkler to water the garden. It make different “shapes” of sprinkling, so my though is to set it in the center of each bed, turn the water on low, and let it go for a while. The bean roots were a little shallow, which means (even with the great rains we had) I haven’t been watering deeply enough.
I’m also going to put some more ant poison on two fire any mounds most in my immediate way. I can’t tell if it’s working or not. I hope it’s working and those damn ants are dying.
When all the garden work is done and all the housework is done, I am going to open a beer and sit in my lounge chair with my iPod and knitting. It’s going to be wonderful. If the universe wants to screw up any part of my plan for tomorrow, please let it not be this part. I really want to hang out in my lounge chair tomorrow. :D
Now I’m going to bed so I will have enough energy to do all the many things I want and need to do tomorrow. I had a pretty busy day today too, and I am actually sleepy at a normal hour.
