Totally Potable

Almost two weeks ago, I posted about some 8th graders who had gotten sick after drinking bottled water out of a school vending machine. I also expounded on my personal theory that there was nothing at all wrong with the water, and that 8th graders can be both opportunistic and panicky and can have a multitude of conscious and unconscious motivations to “want” to be sick (for attention, to get out of school, to cause a mess, and so on).

Well, there’s been an update to the story, now that the test results are in. There wasn’t anything at all wrong with the water.

Of course, they won’t be done testing it for mold, fungus, and yeast until next week, but I don’t anticipate those tests are going to show anything other than potable water being in those water bottles.

Footnotes
  1. And really, why are these kids buying bottled water out of a vending machine anyway? I know there are water fountains and faucets at schools. If they want water with them in a container they can open and re-close, they could fill them themselves for free just about anywhere. Tap water is actually potable (and portable too). But noooo … everyone wants to pay for water these days. []
