I heard a strange and loud thump outside, so I went to investigate. They just cut down that cottonwood tree across the street!

What the hell?! The only utility line related problem with that tree was one branch on the street side too near the lines. Removing that branch would have solved the problem for years, if not forever. Sure, the tree was much, much taller than the utility poles and lines, so there were some branches at the very top that might have fallen down in a really huge and awful storm and broken a line, but looking down the street, that applies to almost every tree that’s anywhere near the utility lines. Hell, it applies to the cottonwood across the street that is still standing! They can’t possibly be planning to cut down all the trees that are anywhere near those lines, can they?!
I’m pretty damn sure the neighbors across the street are not going to be at all happy to come home and find one of their huge trees completely missing … except for the stump they are now left to deal with. I would go ask the crew what their intentions are for the rest of the trees on that side of the street, but they all disappeared sometime between when I heard the thump and got out on my porch. There isn’t a single tree murderer to be found, though they left all their big trucks parked in my way. Gee, thanks!
I hope they don’t chop down too many more trees today. I can tell you right now, if they do, I don’t want to be here when everyone gets home from work. There’s going to be loud screaming out on the street.
Now I’m scared for my trees! I think I’ll stop demanding we get sidewalks and curbs. If this is the way they deal with a few branches threatening some wires, I can only imagine they’d want to clear-cut my whole front yard to put in some sidewalks and curbs … and then offer me new, tiny, free trees to add more shade to our paved areas (some fifteen or twenty years from now).
