It’s Cool

Well, it’s a little cool outside this morning! Hope it warms up soon, because I have garden tasks on the list for today!

While I am waiting for the sun to come up and the temperature to rise enough for me to be outside without shivering, I’ve been having my morning coffee and clearing the useless crap out of iTunes. Really, there is no reason at all to have over 50 gigabytes of podcasts sitting around on my hard drive! I also need to clear the crud from the music library, because there’s a lot of crud in there too. I already went through the TV shows and movies I have gotten free from the iTunes store over the years, and boy did those things take up room. I’d been wondering where all my hard drive space was going.

Of course, there’s also a huge folder weighing several gigabytes sitting on my desktop that needs to be sorted, and probably a load of ridiculous junk that can be tossed in my documents folder as well.

Amazing how much junk piles up on a computer over the years. I’m being pretty brutal about deleting stuff too. If I haven’t looked at it in the last 6 months, it just goes. Except the knitting patterns and other crafty stuff. Most of that will be burned to CD’s … likely never to be looked at again. Something I have noticed about myself is that once something is put on a shelf and isn’t on the computer anymore, it never gets touched again. Might as well delete it all too, but I have to hoard something, right? At least on a shelf, the CD’s don’t take up much room and my hard drive isn’t clogged with stuff I am not looking at or using.

My head is feeling SO much better today. The migraine released its hold last night during dinner, but when I went to bed last night, it felt like it was coming back. I immediately got up, took three aspirin, drank a little herbal tea, and went back to bed. Woke up feeling fine. I’ve got a migraine hangover –tired feeling, and a little fuzzy in the head– but no migraine. Thank goodness. This one was just over three days, and that was getting too long. Glad it’s over, and I hope I don’t have another one like it any time soon. Pure misery.

Since I am complaining about physical pains, let me tell you about my left hand! I guess it was a month ago I was out in the garden weeding, and my hand slipped on the side of one of the raised beds. A large splinter poked into the palm of my left hand, but it remained attached to the board it was sticking out of, so I cleaned up the wound, checked with a magnifying glass for anything stuck in my hand, and not finding anything, pressed on with life. Well, about two days ago, I noticed the scar –it was completely healed at this point– was hurting like crazy. A large red welt was forming, and just touching it sent me through the roof.

I sterilized a needled, got out the magnifying glass again, and went exploring, but I still didn’t find any non-human objects in my hand. Yesterday, the welt started looking a lot like a blister (OK, pocket of pus), so I gritted my teeth and started messing with it. A very pointed and somewhat tiny bit of wood finally worked its way out of my palm. OUCH! It’s been about 12 hours since that happened, and I thought it would be feeling much better today, but it still hurts like hell, and it’s still looking like a blister (yeah, yeah, pocket of pus — really deep too).

The thought of any more exploration and/or squeezing around on it doesn’t sound at all like fun, but I think there must still be something down in there. I guess after I am done in the garden for the day and after I do the dishes and my hands are all soft from the water, I’ll get out the Exacto knife and go at it the way I should have the first time. I know to many of you, that sound insane, but understand … my hands don’t look calloused, but the skin on my palms is thick. If there’s a tiny splinter still in there, I’d be best served to get it out myself, as it will never be able to push through the skin itself. It’ll just keep sitting there festering and hurting for who knows how long. It took weeks for the piece that came out last time to finally make it close enough to the surface for me to get it with a needle (and it still wasn’t AT the surface, it was just under the thick callous), and I don’t feel like waiting a few more weeks –in pain– for another one to do the same, while it gets more and more infected. Yup, best to be done with it as quickly as possible.

Well, better get back to tossing stuff out of iTunes. The sun is starting to come up, and I imagine in another hour or so it’ll be plenty warm enough to go outside and get some gardening work done. The high today is supposed to be 80ºF, but I bet it gets warmer than that. We are back to having steaming hot days and chilly nights again. I hate weather like this. Either be chilly or not! Nothing worse than having the heater on at night and the AC on during the day!

Footnotes
  1. I’d be burning stuff to DVD’s if my stupid DVD burner was actually burning DVD’s. If I ever buy another Apple computer, I will not be getting the Superdrive. I’ve had no luck with them. Might as well just plan of buying an external drive for burning DVD’s, since it looks like that’s what I will be doing anyway. []
