Dirt Digging Done
April 1st, 2009 - 12:04 pm
Still not especially warm outside, but I went and did all my garden tasks anyway. I couldn’t wait any longer. I have other things to do that are also going to take a chunk of time … like baking bread and cookies.
So what did I get done today?
More dirt was piled on the potatoes. I’d have liked to put more dirt down than I did, but I was too lazy to go see if there was another bag of dirt in the back of the truck. What got put down will do for now. Next time I am near the truck, I’ll check for more dirt.
The Three Sisters mounds were all topped with compost. Then I replanted a few squash seeds where some didn’t come up and planted the Kentucky Wonder beans. I maybe should have waited to plant the beans, but a) they won’t come up for about 10 days, giving the corn 10 more days to get taller, and b) I’ll use some bamboo poles for supports if the beans overtake the growth of the corn (which is being used as bean trellises). What can I say? I am impatient, and the season is getting late. I’m sure it will all work out fine.
I planted a couple more bush cucumbers in Bed One, because a couple of the ones that came up look really pathetic. I also planted the Lemon Cucumber seeds by the okra. This is another instance where I maybe should have waited for the okra to be taller (it is also being used for vine support), but I need to get the cucumbers started. It’s not like I don’t have a ton of bamboo in the back yard I can make supports out of if I need to. Who know, maybe the okra will take off and really start growing this week.
I planted a few radishes to fill in the places where I had pulled up radishes. I’ll be doing more of that tomorrow, as there as a few radishes getting plucked for tonight’s salad.
And … I gave everything a really deep watering, which means it will probably rain tonight. Every time I give in and water everything a lot, it rains. Oh well, the plants won’t mind at all.
Later, I’ll be going out to weed and hover over my plants, as well as getting some seeds going in my starter tray. I probably don’t need to do that, as everything does seem to be coming up, but I haven’t seen any sight of the peppers yet, and I don’t want to be without peppers. If they come up on Bed Two and I end up with some healthy seedlings too, maybe I’ll give some to my mom.
Damn it. I just remembered I need to transplant the basil somewhere other than where it is! Oh well, it can wait a little longer. Won’t hurt it any to get bigger before I go digging it up and moving it, and it’s not like any of my tomato plants are large enough yet to make building the trellises worth my while today (or this week).
I wish it was warmer outside. I really wanted to spend a lot of time just hanging out in the garden, since I haven’t really done that in a few days The breeze is just too chilly to be hanging around outside not doing anything. Maybe later this afternoon. Right now, I have to run to the store for something. I am becoming highly annoyed with my ability to completely forget to buy things that are printed in large letters on my shopping list. It’s not like I have had crazy long shopping lists either. No, the last few times I have gone to the store, there have been ten items or less on the shopping list, and still, I somehow managed to forget at least one item! Stupid, stupid Orb!
