Garden News

Didn’t get any planting done today, but I did pull up yet more weeds that had popped up over the last 24 hours, and I watered so the soil will be moist in the morning when I do start the planting. It’s supposed to rain this weekend, and I want those seeds in the ground before that happens. Rain is free water!

The seedlings I planted some nights ago in my seed starter have begun to come up. Some mold has also begun to grow. I don’t know what I am doing wrong, but I’m not going to worry about it too much. Tomorrow I’ll set them out in the sunlight to kill the mold and dry them out (I swear I barely watered them the night I planted them and not at all since). Some will make it. Some might not. Any that do is just a jump start … a bonus. It’s not like the bed I’ll be planting them is even built yet anyway.

In other seedling news, another of the bell pepper seedlings croaked, and the surviving tomatoes are sitting there not dying or growing. I am more convinced than ever that I need to buy at least a couple of tomato plants at the nursery, just in case none of my tomato plants ever grow taller than two inches.

But the lettuce, carrots, radishes, and onions are looking great! We’ll be having a little baby veggie salad this weekend sometime when I thin out the lettuce and radishes! Apparently carrots sprouts can be eaten too, so maybe I’ll toss some of them in as well. Microgreens!

I would also like to note that my resident possum hasn’t invaded my garden to steal any edibles … yet. Let’s hope it stays that way. Also, Sasha has ceased digging in the empty beds now that the soil isn’t all light and fluffy anymore (thanks to my watering it to compact it somewhat). Though she has been digging in the area of the front flower bed I have weeded. Grrrr.

Speaking of weeding, I guess I need to get back to that one of these days. It’s just the work sucks, and it seems so fruitless since the damn Bermuda grass starts taking over again almost as soon as I pull it out. Still, it would be cool to have a front flower bed again, maybe even with some flowers in it. :)
