Come On, Sun!

It’s planting day today! Really not much of a planting day, seeing as I am only planting six square feet of the raised bed, but I have been so eager and ready to get some planting done! Now I am impatiently waiting for the sun to come up so I can go see if the dirt is dry enough to plant this morning, or if I need to wait until later this afternoon to give it a little longer to dry out from the rain. Probably not going to be an issue, seeing as I believe I will be spreading what’s left of one bag of last year’s compost and another bag of regular dirt over the whole bed anyway. Those are going to be mostly dry coming out of the bags. Though Lin keeps suggesting I not add more dirt. Well, I want more dirt, so I’ll probably do whatever the hell I like, as I almost always do.
And … I bought a packet of seeds at the grocery store yesterday. Nasturtium. Very pretty flowers, and so many articles on companion planting suggest them for in the veggie garden, though no one really seems to agree on whether they repel aphids or work as a trap plant†. All the same, I’m going to plant a couple here and there. I’ve never done well with flowering plants, but Nasturtium are supposedly a no-fail plant, and they have the added benefit of being edible too.
Wheeee! Planting day! Why, I may even get overly energetic and go pull all the crud out of front flower bed once and for all. Since the soil is so damp, the job shouldn’t be too difficult … or at least easier than when it’s dry. Maybe I’ll plant some Nasturtium and Calendula in there as well. Heck, maybe I’ll even plant some carrots and onions!
Come on, sun! Can’t wait for it to be light enough and warm enough to start digging in the dirt!
Footnotes- † A trap plant is one that lures the bad bugs away from your good ones, because they are way more tasty. Sure the trap plant gets eaten heavily, but the other plants get left alone. [↩]
