Eek, Bugs!

Today’s singular panic attack involved a bug found in the bedroom. Two bugs, actually.

I heard a ruckus in the bedroom, the sounds of three cats having far too much fun. When I went to check on them, I discovered they had somehow managed to pull all the sheets off the bed and wad them up in the middle. How they did this, who knows. These three cats are very creative.

Anyway, I had to completely remove the sheets and covers and remake the beds (with the help of the cats, of course). In the process of doing so, I found a bug hiding along one of the corner seams. A smallish brown bug I could not identify. Carefully checking all the seams and corners, I found another living one and one dead one. Well, my first thought was “OMG! BED BUGS!!!!” I immediately began to itch all over. Not that I wasn’t already itchy all over thanks to my allergy problems lately, but suddenly I really itched, and I just knew there had been bugs crawling on me at night sucking my vital juices.

I stuck the bugs on some tape and ran to the computer. Wouldn’t you know it, the internet was not working! ARGH!!! There might be bed bugs in my house, and I can’t look them up online to be sure! The horror! I went back to the bedroom and started moving the bed and mattress and searching for more bugs. I found none. While I have never seen or experienced a bed bug, I was under the impression they didn’t usually come in such small numbers. Still … they were bugs found in my bed. Yuck.

Finally the internet worked out its issues and I got to look at some photos of bed bugs and bed bug bites. Well, no, they weren’t bed bugs, and I’m fairly certain if either of us had ever gotten out of bed in the morning with big red bites anywhere on our body that we didn’t have when we went to bed, we’d have noticed. So they weren’t bed bugs, thankfully, but what the hell were they?

An hour later, I had my answer: carpet beetle larva. Apparently quite common, and while destructive to natural fibers, they don’t bite or cause humans any actual physical grief. Still not happy about finding them, but at least there were only two, and those two are now dead. All the same … YUCK! But at least they weren’t bed bugs. I used to always worry about getting infested with those horrid things when Lin was away from home all the time staying in cheap motels. I may have no personal knowledge of bed bugs, but I have heard the stories, and it’s just not something I ever care to have any personal experience with!

And that was the major excitement around here today. Don’t I live an action packed life?
