Gendered Potties?

While I may or may not agree with the George Washington University law professor who says 5,000 port-o-potties might not be enough for the inauguration, I think the question in my mind, after reading this story, is this: There are such things as gender specific port-o-potties? Really? Port-o-potties set aside for the use of either men or women exclusively?

I don’t think I have been to a large festival or event of any sort in my adult years where the portable toilets weren’t genderless. Anyone who needed to go stood in a line in front of whichever one they wanted to use. Aside from some portable toilets having a urinal, it is in addition to the required refuse hole. It seems a little outdated and weird for the Parks Department to be specifying that port-o-potties are for either men or women, when they work perfectly well for either. Why, they are even designed that way. Go figure.

Do I just live in a really progressive city where people realize anyone can use the same refuse hole in a port-o-potty, no matter their gender? Are port-o-potties in other parts of the USA really gender specific?! That just freaks me out, if it’s true.
