Eager for Spring

Yesterday, it was 84ºF. I was running around outside in a tank top, climbing trees, and generally enjoying the great weather. Today, it is gray and overcast, and the temperature outside hasn’t quite reached 50ºF yet. The weather this winter has been so strange.

I am ready for it to really be spring! I want to get to planting and tending my garden. I want green things growing. I want fresh spring produce straight from my yard. Oh sure, I always hate winter and look forward to spring, but now that the gardening bug has bit me hard, I really can’t tolerate the wait.

Any moment now, I will be pestering Lin about going to Home Depot for some seeds. Tomorrow, no matter the weather, I want to dump all the dirt out of my container garden, add some more compost, and refill the containers with soil. Then I want to plant some early season lettuce, carrots, radishes, and maybe spinach or kohlrabi. My plan this year, since I’ll have a proper garden in the back yard at last, is to use the containers and planters for rotating crops … the kinds of things that are pulled up to eat completely and then can be replanted right away. Also, since most of those things don’t like awful hot summer days, having them in the containers will be good so I can move them into the shade or even into the house, if I need to do so.

I am so excited about spring coming soon. This years gardening is going to go so much better than last years. I know so much more now then I did then, and there’s no way summer can be that awful again. Can it? I certainly hope not. Last summer was flat out terrible for all living things.

Well, time to go bug Lin about Home Depot. I want seeds now!

Footnotes
  1. No, really. I climbed the pecan tree and sat in it for a while watching Lin work. It was fun, and it annoyed him, which made it even more fun. []
