Oh God, Yes! Popcorn!

Popcorn!

Mmmm … popcorn. Popcorn made in a matter of seconds in a microwave. Tasty, buttery-flavored popcorn.

What? Did we get a new microwave? No, but I do have an engineering and electrical genius living in my house, and sometimes he gets up off his butt and gets creative. The fuse was fine. It was a switch, which he replaced with another switch that we already happened to have. It’s a little cobbled together, but it works … or at least it just worked well enough for me to have my favorite late-night snack of popcorn. I’m hoping it will hold out until the Great Microwave Hand-Off happens later this year, when I will be giving an unwanted microwave a new home. Let’s just say I will be pushing the button to open the door very carefully and praying.

I didn’t think I would miss my microwave as much as I did, but there are some things in life that are just too much of a hassle without one … like popcorn, oatmeal, tea, and reheated coffee.

Speaking of tea, I think a nice cup of herbal tea would hit the spot right about now. Mmmm … almost instantaneous hot tea.

  1. Or, had he not been so nice, he could simply have soldered a jumper across the contacts and you could have operated the oven by plugging and unplugging the power lead from the wall socket.

FWIW, I’ve had a trouble-free Sharp Carousel Smart & Easy mid-size since 1992. They were regular Best Buy rated models in Consumer Reports for many years; odd when one considers that most everything else Sharp ever made besides microwaves was crap. I see them frequently at Goodwill for about $25, if you need a stopgap.

  2. Jumping the contacts would have been the next step had we not had a switch that could be rigged to work. Mom’s previous microwave was “fixed” that way, and while annoying to use the power cord as an off switch, she used it for years afterward.

That Sharp is exactly the one I have been looking for! Everyone who has one raves about them. I checked the nearby Goodwills a few times, but it looks like even though the switch is a little sensitive on mine, it’ll last until December when my buddy in San Antonio will be giving me an extra one she’ll have around. I’m still going to keep my eyes out for one of those Sharps though. They are apparently the best microwaves ever made. :D
