Fact Checking

I just made my weekly visit to the Washington Post’s Fact Checker to see what they had to say about the Republican campaign’s latest “bombshell” lobbed at Obama. I’d already done my own research, but it’s always good to hear what others have to say, just to make sure I haven’t drunk too much blue kool-aid. I haven’t. That’s always nice to know.

Bottom line? McCain gets it wrong again and earns himself two more Pinocchio noses.

With very few exceptions, all American politicians, including both presidential candidates, are in favor of a progressive income tax system and welfare policies (such as Medicare and Social Security) that “redistribute wealth.” Barack Obama is more enthusiastic about “spreading the wealth around” than his Republican rival. But that does not make him a “Socialist.” The McCain camp is wrong to suggest that the Illinois senator advocated an “wealth redistribution” role for the Supreme Court in his 2001 interview.

I swear it is as if the Republicans latch onto a single word, don’t really pay any attention to any of the other words surrounding it, and then make stuff up to fit their agenda. Or maybe they just don’t understand English when it involves big words and deep concepts. I’m still not sure where to put the Republican campaign on my Evil-Stupid scale.
