Sad to be American

I am sick and tired of hearing about “real” America and “real” Americans and conversations about who is pro-America and who is anti-America. It’s disgusting and reminds me all too much of another very dark time in America’s history. Do we really need to go through another stage of McCarthyism? I guess we do, seeing as those in power seem to feel a need to constantly repeat history, but I wonder why it is they only want to repeat the ugly parts.

And last night when we heard that Barack’s grandmother was in dire condition, I turned to Lin and asked him how long he thought it would take before someone said something nasty about his wanting to take time off to go see her. Took about five minutes for the folks at Free Republic to start spewing gross and vile thoughts, and by this afternoon, I see it has spread all over the internet. I haven’t turned on the TV news today for fear of what I might hear. I can only imagine there are talking heads on at least one channel saying something about the situation that would make my stomach turn.

As a real American living in real America, the things I have seen and heard the last couple of months make me fear for our country all the more. I’m not afraid of who might win the right to sit at the desk in the Oval Office, as America has proven time and again she can survive any President. No, what worries me is the level of hate and division among Americans themselves.

When I see videos of people spewing insults and slurs at other people lined up to vote, it makes me sad.

When I hear radio personalities saying someone visiting their ailing grandmother is nothing more than a political stunt, it makes me sad.

When I read about Americans calling other Americans “anti-American” or implying they are less patriotic because they hold different views, it makes me sad.

And on and on…

I’ve been very sad the last few weeks. Sad and worried. America can survive any President, but can it survive such civil unrest?
