Sigh. I’ve been looking at the planting charts for fall/winter gardens. I don’t like fall/winter veggies all that much it seems. I have a great source of lettuce and spinach, and it’d be silly to grow my own and deal with the hassle, and I hate any kind of greens that require cooking. I ate too many of them growing up. That leaves a few varieties of peas, carrots, radishes, onions, and garlic. Peas I can do, but I’m not so sure root crops are ideal for container gardening. I’ll probably do some radishes and carrots, but I’m not bothering with onions and garlic. I just don’t think my set-up is suitable for them.
How are my current plants doing? The pepper plants continue to bloom and the blooms appear to set and then they fall off. It’s been that way all summer long. Mr. Stripy grew a new branch with some flower buds on it, but if they don’t bloom and set in the next week, that plant is getting pulled up. I’m sick of looking at it. The large Better Boy still has that one tomato on it, and no more of the blooms seem to be setting. As soon as that tomato has the barest hint of pink to it, I’m plucking it and pulling that plant up too. The Better Boy I chopped off just above dirt level is sprouting a lot of new growth, so I’m going to see what comes of that. The Sugar Snacks have gobs of tomatoes right now, but I think that will be the last of them for the year. Such a shame, because they were really good. I’m hoping to let some go to seed. I want to replant them again next year. The Super 100 cherry tomatoes are just now taking off and blooming like crazy. We’ll see if they set fruit or not. I’m betting not. I might be wrong. Maybe they’ll be my late season tomatoes.
In short, still disgusted with my gardening efforts this year, and I am not looking forward to having a fall garden. I will have one, because I do need to learn how to grow winter things, but I am not going to be happy about it. I much prefer summer veggies! I just wish I had gotten more of them this summer. Wah!
Maybe I should plant some winter flowers in some of my pots, as soon as I figure out what kinds of winter flowers exist. I know nothing at all about non-vegetable plants.
