Make the Heat Stop
August 2nd, 2008 - 5:06 pm
Lin and I both slept in really late today. While it isn’t especially unusual for me to sleep in on a Saturday, normally that does not mean going to bed shortly after midnight and not getting up until well into the afternoon. Even stranger is Lin sleeping in that late no matter what. I can’t recall a time, even when he was working late nights, when he wasn’t up sometime during mid-morning. I guess we both just needed to get some rest.
The heat is beyond overbearing today. I went outside to check the mail and cool my plants down with a little water, but that has been the only outdoor adventures for the day. It’s blazing out there and just plain miserable. We’d thought about going somewhere and doing something today, but it’s been so nice hiding in the dark cool house.
I was going to slow-cook some round steak for dinner, but I’m changing the plan to sandwiches. The thought if turning on the stove at all doesn’t sound like a good one. Maybe later tonight I’ll go ahead and cook the round steak so all I have to do tomorrow is heat it up in the microwave. Maybe we’ll just eat junk food from Sonic tomorrow. I have not been feeling inspired to sweat in the kitchen at all this week, but I have been. I need a break from the sweating.
Since Lin is watching some boring movie I am not at all interested in, I think I’ll go sew some pockets on my sundress, because I have decided it needs pockets, and then get the laundry started a whole day early. Maybe a nice game of Civilization will keep me from being too bored while the laundry churns away. But if I do the laundry today, what will I do with myself tomorrow? I guess I’ll lay around like a slug and be bored. It’s supposed to be blazing hot tomorrow again too, which means I won’t get to spend hours outside puttering around like I usually do.
Oh, and an update on my garden: the plants are not happy with the heat. The cucumbers are failing, and they have been infested with mealy bugs now too. I think once the cucumbers on the most devastated plants are ready to pick, I’m just going to pull them up and toss them. I’m also going to start cutting back the tomato plants. I think my plan to keep them going into fall is a good one. While they haven’t been producing much at all, thanks to the abominable weather, they are apparently hardy enough to survive this heat and therefore good plants. I need to start planning for a “fall” garden, but seeing as it looks like it’s going to be plenty warm into our supposed fall this year, I’m going to plant things I’d normally do in the spring. There should be a decent little growing season from late August through maybe early December this year for getting some more tomatoes and cucumbers.
Or maybe I’ll lose my mind and just rip everything out in a couple of weeks and wait for proper cooler temps for fall veggies. I’m getting tired of all the work and very little pay-off for it. We are going to go ahead with our plan to build a proper raised-bed garden in the back for next spring, and we’ll just be hoping summer is a little less awful next year. It’s going to be a huge investment in time and money, but we really do want to become more self-sufficient with the foodstuffs. We have to make it work.
So that’s how our day is going … slowly, boringly, and with lots of sweating involved. Sucks to be sweating when you aren’t actually doing anything and are sitting in a house with AC, but I refuse to turn the thermostat down any lower. Our electric bill is already verging on being outrageous.
Eh … off to find things to entertain myself with. I’d rather be outside, but that’s not going to happen today. As much as I love being outdoors, I do prefer not to fry immediately upon stepping out on my porch.
