The devil is beating his wife. I haven’t seen that happen in a long time.
In case you don’t know, and there’s no reason you should since the statement seems to be a really Southern US thing, “the devil is beating his wife” means it’s raining while the sun shines.
I once said this at an outdoor party when it was bright and sunny but raining, and a lady standing next to me was terribly offended by my making fun of spousal abuse. I mean terribly and horribly offended. Outraged. I was much younger then and not nearly as apt to hold my tongue in social situations, so I informed her if that offended her so greatly, she had best find someone else to go stand by, because I was sure to say something else in the next ten minutes that would really blow her socks off. I still roll my eyes when I think about how offended she got about a completely stupid Southern saying which in no way makes fun of spousal abuse.
Anyway, the devil is beating his wife, and I’m going to go move my plants out into the driveway (the ones I can) to catch her tears.

Heh!
I had heard that one many times before! I would have loved to see the old goats face when you told her that! I bet that was priceless.
It’s one of my priceless memories: a 70 year old women in pearls and a Jackie Onasis suit with her jaw on the floor gaping at something as silly as “the devil is beating his wife.”
And hey, I was just being honest! If that offended her that much, she did not need to hear anything else I would have to say. I used to be a LOT more abrasive and in people’s faces about stuff when I was a youngin’ … and WAY too political in social situations.
Not that I don’t still drop the comments at cocktail parties, but I have since learned how to say it all sweetly.
So Funny! I don’t remember you being mean and cruel to old folks! However, I remember you as a quiet and shy kid at school. Now you torment old ladies about satan abusing his wife! LOL
Some of the little old ladies I had to socialize with back then deserved it! Oh, they used to drive me insane. Some of them are still around and driving me insane, but I’m a lot nicer to them these days. People over 90 get a break.

I’m always surprised anyone remembers me from school. I kept my head down as much as possible. Seemed safer. Some people there were just so mean-spirited.
