This afternoon I found a small hornworm happily chewing on one of my puny cherry tomato plants. I documented it moments before smashing it into atom-sized bits.

And on the topic of my deformed and mutant cherry tomatoes, here are some photos of exactly what I am talking about. It’s not just one or two of them either. It’s all the current fruit. Very weird.

In other tomato news, we got a tasty all yellow tomato of unknown variety at the farmers market this weekend. I know it’s an heirloom variety, because the farmers we get them from only do heirloom types. Heirlooms grow true to their seeds, so right now I am preparing the seeds from the first half we are eating tonight for later usage this year in the fall garden or next spring.
I am still somewhat disgruntled with how very little my plants are producing, but I’ve been talking to even more local gardeners, and yup … it isn’t just me. The weather just turned way too hot too fast. I may be able to salvage the season by helping along the pollination, but first the stupid things have to bloom some more, and they haven’t been doing that lately. Well, except the cherry tomatoes which seem determined to pump out as many mutant tomatoes as they possibly can. I hope they taste better than they look.
