Maybe More?

There may be more to that fraudulent charge on my bank card. While checking for any further weirdness with the bank account, or a charge back of the freaking $25, I got distracted by reading further down the statement page. I found another odd charge for $24.95 (through PayPal) exactly one week before. I did some research and found a few connections here and there … and all of them odd and reeking of scam.

At any rate, a person matching entirely too many points of the dataset I started with has an address in Texas with a re-mailer service and an actual address in Turkey. Furthermore, this person is listed in a couple of internet locations as trying to scam people by charging downloadable software and then reversing the charge and screwing the company (I’m betting it isn’t him reversing the charge — they are all stolen numbers). If my theory is correct, this person bought some iPhone unlocking software on June 9 with one of our bank cards. I can’t tell which one, but I hope it was mine. If not, that means our entire account has been compromised, and that’s going to just be one huge pain in everyone’s ass.

Don’t think I haven’t considered that Lin may have paid for something he doesn’t want me to know about. Not that this doesn’t happen from time to time, but the only link to anything on the internet with that particular company name is iPhone unlocking software. No iPhone here. We don’t even know anyone with an iPhone. So, I’m pretty sure we’ve been scammed more than the once. I’ll ask Lin about it, but I already know the answer is he didn’t buy anything anywhere using PayPal on June 9.

None of this answers how someone got my bank card number (or compromised our whole account — eek). That’s the biggest puzzle of all.

Doesn’t that make you angry? I’m angry for you just thinking about it. I went to the corner store and bought a drink using my bank card, days later when the charge appeared on my statement I freaked out. It was barely 2 bucks but I forgot I made the purchase and got all paranoid. Felt like a fool when I finally remembered. I hope you figure out how they gained access to your card #. Ugh. What a pain in the ass.

Because I really do use it at so few places, yes, it makes me angry. Unless there was some sort of security breach at the bank, that means someone I do business with often has someone working for them that is a thief or that the business doesn’t care as much about security as I do. So yup … angry.

Nervous too, because how do I know it won’t happen again? Or that it’s over with now that we canceled that card? Scary and a pain in the ass.
