Spore Disappointment

I have been waiting very impatiently for years for the Spore game to finally make it into production. From the very first time I saw the very first demo clips from the very first test version they showed off at conventions, I was prepared to pay whatever they wanted to play the game. I wasn’t going to need to wait to read reviews or wait for the initial price to come down or any of those other reasons I wait to buy some game that has caught my attention. It was going to be an automatic, must have on day of release, situation, and after obsessing about Spore and waiting for it for three years, I’ve gotten really excited about it. I know, for a fact, it is a game I will love immensely.

So you may well be able to imagine my excitement when I heard the Creature Creator was finally available for download as both a limited free trial or a full paid version. I couldn’t wait to start creating creatures that would later go on to populate my and other people’s Spore worlds! I eagerly went to the Spore Creature Creator download page and downloaded the free trial for my Mac and planned to spend the $10 next week after payday for the full version. Then I would have something fun and Spore related to keep me busy until the September debut of the full game. The download took forever, because I imagine there are many, many people as eager as I am to get their hands on it. I had to wait impatiently as it slowly made its way to my computer.

Once it did, I double clicked the install program and was rudely made aware of the fact that I would need to upgrade my less than three-year-old operating system — Mac’s Tiger — to Leopard in order to play this game. Yes, they are releasing a game that everyone is going to want, and they are releasing it exclusively for the Leopard operating system, which hasn’t even been in the wild for a year yet. It isn’t like the Intel version of OS X is ancient by any means, so this seems surprisingly stupid to me.

Anyway, my response has been to rant at poor Lin about it for the last hour, begin writing some emails to the appropriate corporations which will be promptly ignored but make me feel better, and well, rant some more about it.

I’m really angry about this, and you’d think somewhere along the way they must have known it would be Leopard only. They should have just announced that a long time ago rather than keep saying there was an OS X version to be released with the Windows (XP and Vista) version. Because, see … I’m using OS X. I can’t play the game! Yup, it pisses me right off. Electronic Arts (EA) is officially on my shit list now.

I’m going to move to the kitchen with my ranting and make dinner. This week is just not going to be a good week. I can only imagine what other strange events and huge let-downs are going to happen in the coming days. I hate weeks like this.
