After the rain passed and the sun came out, I made myself busy sitting in the yard doing nothing. Well, to the untrained eye, I was doing nothing. What I was actually doing was contemplating which pots to put which plants into. I came home with a bunch more plants which had to be planted today. They were wilted when I got out to the porch this morning. Eek!
Finally I decided the peppers probably didn’t need to be in extremely large pots, or at least they would be easier than tomatoes to transplant if needed, so I got the 40 pound bag of dirt I bought this morning and set to work. I ran out of dirt, so I ended up searching around all the really large pots we have in the back and found just enough to finish. I would have had more than enough dirt, but the large pots all had ant homes in the bottom half of them, so that dirt is now spread out in the hot sun to get rid of the ants … just in case I need even more dirt.
So what started as “I think I’ll just plant a few plants in those two Earthboxes Mom gave me” has now morphed into a collection of seven tomatoes of four different varieties, six peppers of four different varieties, and snap peas (five have come up). I also have new cucumbers seeds to find a home for, and the two from the old seeds that came up are now planted in the front flower bed. I needed the pot and dirt for tomatoes, so I had to make a decision about them.
Here are the original planters containing snap peas, Fajita Bell Peppers, Cherry Peppers, Banana Peppers, and Mr. Stripy Tomatoes:

And now the newest additions … Sugar Snack and Super 100 Cherry Tomatoes, Better Boy Slicing Tomatoes, and Texas A&M JalapeƱos:

I really, really didn’t want to plant this much stuff the first year I get back into gardening, but the little old ladies didn’t need all the plants they had, and I don’t turn down free plants. Now all I have to do is keep these things alive, transplant some of them into larger pots as needed, and hopefully I will end up with a ton of produce! With this many plants, I am bound to end up with something, right?
This weekend Lin and I are going to decide where all these things are going to be for the season. The plants on the porch are, in fact, leaning off the porch, so I have conceded they require more sun than they are getting. I’d really like them to be in the front yard, but I suppose I won’t gripe too much if they end up in the back. We’ll see if I can’t convince Lin the front yard will do just as well, since it’s easier for me to get to them and water them out there. We shall see who wins the argument in just a few more days. :D
I was worn out when I woke up, then Aunt Flo came knocking and I had to go to the grocery store or we’d have all starved to death tonight. After all the walking back and forth from the front of the property to the very back (every round trip equals one block — I made many trips) and lugging dirt, pots, and plants around, I am now officially wiped out. I’m going to go make grilled cheese sandwiches and some canned soup for dinner, and then I plan to become horizontal on the couch. I’d say thank goodness the weekend is almost here, but seeing as the weather is going to be beautiful, we have to go to the market, and we have a mile long list of yard things to do, it doesn’t look like this weekend is going to be as lazy as most. This is shaping up to be one very long week. Ugh. I need a vacation.
