I’ve been voting for US Presidents since 1984. Only once in all those years did I vote for someone who succeeded in moving into the Whitehouse. My track record for being on the winning team is bad, I guess, probably because I don’t choose who to vote for by looking at who is or will be winning, and I don’t just stick to the two major parties.
In 1984, I voted for Reagan (Republican). In 1988, it was Ron Paul (Libertarian), and then in 1992, I voted for Perot (no party). Dole (Republican) got my vote in 1996, Gore (Democrat) in 2000, and in 2004 I went for Kerry (Democrat). As you can see, I am all over the place with my party affiliations. That’s because I vote for people and issues not parties.
I wanted to vote for Badnarik (Libertarian) in 2004, but I didn’t want Bush in office again, thus the vote for the lesser of two evils from the major players. Not that my vote made any difference anyway. I should have just voted for who I wanted to vote for. Yes, I still regret that one instance where I voted against someone instead of for someone. I was not, at all, fond of Kerry, but I knew another four years of Bush would suck, and it has.
This go around, I have, for the moment, thrown my support behind Obama. Unless he doesn’t get the nomination or something really outrageous happens between now and November, he’ll get my 2008 vote. If he isn’t the nominee or he does something extremely stupid to turn me off, I have no idea who I would vote for. It’ll be just like 2004 again. I may have to vote for someone I am not at all thrilled with to keep someone I completely can’t stand from becoming President. I guess we’ll just have to see what happens. It’s still possible I will simply not vote for President at all. That would be weird, but I truly dislike voting when I don’t care for any of the candidates. There really should be a “none of the above” slot of the ballot.
What would be really weird is if I somehow managed to vote for someone who I both liked and who won the office! I wouldn’t know how to act! Oh yes, I would. I’d gripe about them just as much as any of the others, because in the end, anyone from the major parties is a professional politician. My fondness for the whole lot of them has wained greatly since Reagan, let me tell you (not that he was all that great either, but I was young and silly and in love with the Republicans). With age comes wisdom, yes?
