What the Hell?!
March 7th, 2008 - 5:32 pm
I wake up from a nap. The water is non-functional. I call the utility company and ask what’s up. They say we were disconnected for non-payment. I say I am looking at the last bill, which isn’t a disconnect notice and no disconnect notice was swinging on my front doorknob, so how the hell have I been disconnected? They say pay X amount and we’ll reconnect you.
I pay X amount. I call and give them my confirmation code. They say they want another X amount of money. Oh, and they don’t want to talk to me, because I am not the account holder. I am only the account holder’s wife. Fine.
I pay the new X amount, get a new code, call it in, lie and say I am Lin. Now they want $80 to turn the water back on today. Lin drives in, I hand him the phone and let him deal with it. He is seen and heard muttering harshly into the phone.
End result? Through who knows what series of events, none of which make any sense at all to me, we are now out a chunk of change for a bill that wasn’t due and still won’t have water until sometime tomorrow because we refuse to pay them another $80. Tomorrow, it will only cost $25, which we still shouldn’t be paying because our services were NOT scheduled for disconnection! It never matters whose screw up it is, we are always the ones who have to suffer the consequences until it gets sorted out!
Whoever heard of water being turned off for non-payment?! It stunned even the stupid people on the phone, the people who admitted no disconnect notice had been sent and so on and seemed to have no clue what the hell was going on. Why, you’d think they had just woke up from a nap and found their water to be non-functional and had no idea why?
So I guess we’ll just live without water tonight. It’s after 5 pm, and there isn’t going to be any way to sort this out until regular working hours. Sort it out I will though! This is the first time the electric company has shown themselves to be morons, and I don’t want them thinking it’s acceptable. I don’t know why the hell our water was turned off, and neither do they, and well, we need to figure that out don’t we? And like hell am I paying to have service reconnected when it was not supposed to be disconnected in the first place! Bastards!
But really … what the hell?! I guess a night without water isn’t going to kill us. Like Lin just said, you can go to the store and buy buckets of water. You can’t buy buckets of electricity or gas. Things could be worse. Which doesn’t mean I am not currently as mad as a hornet. I am. Believe me, I am.
In other news: the art making went well today.

oh hell no, what if you were a poor little old lady who lived by herself!?
There’s a reason they never cut off the water, even when they cut off the other utilities for non-payment: people can, in a pinch, live for a bit without electricity or gas. Water is essential, and you never know if there’s old people, disabled people, babies, the sick or whatnot there and what happens if something happens to them? A public outcry and a lawsuit. I spent the majority of life in households where utilities were being cut off on an almost regular basis due to no money in the bank when it came due (still happens every once in a while), and never, not once, has the water ever been cut off.
Which is all a moot point anyway, seeing as our bill wasn’t even due yet! I’m going to try to sort that out on the phone tomorrow, but I have the feeling it is going to require going to an office and pitching a fit in person.
