Since we were on the other side of town to go to the market this morning, I conned Lin into letting me run into the yarn store for a few minutes. I think he was shocked when I actually came out after only a few minutes, and I didn’t have any bags in my hands. Yes, I managed to walk into a yarn store, ready, willing, and able (with funds) to buy yarn, and I didn’t buy any.
I’ve been spending some of my computer time for the last few days shopping at on line yarn stores and eBay. I knew basically what I wanted, and I knew how much it would cost me to buy and have shipped to me. I thought, since we’d be near the yarn store, it made sense to stop in and make certain they didn’t have it at about the same price, thereby saving myself having to wait for the yarn to get here. Perfect plan, it seemed to me, but I didn’t realize the prices at the yarn store had gone up yet again. It continues to be a sad fact of a knitter’s life in Austin, that if you want good yarns at anything resembling reasonable prices, not to mention a full selection of available colors, the best choice it to order it on line. Strange indeed that I can order the exact same yarns from small on line shops and pay much less with shipping included.
If the overhead for the mortgage payments and such is that high to have a store on South Congress, perhaps they should consider moving. I always see tons of people in the store, but I do not see tons of yarn leaving with them. That’s the kind of thing that happens when you sell things for significantly more than the manufacturer’s recommended price. Oh well. Their business to run and not mine. I’ll just keep buying my yarn on line. It’s not as much fun, but what’s a girl to do?
So now I am trying to decide exactly which yarn and which colors to get. Then I get to wait for it to get here. I hate the waiting, but I do like being able to buy the best and most yarn for my dollar. I’ve narrowed it down to about four different choices, and I will probably be buying two of them: one pair for Lin and another pair for me. I might even splurge and buy a little skein of something interesting and different, because I will have extra mad money leftover after getting the sock yarn, and you know I can’t let mad money sit around going unused.
I suppose I should toddle off to the kitchen and get started on dinner. We are having leftover chicken, beans, and rice in the form of chicken soft tacos, and for dessert … dark chocolate fudge, which is already chillin’ in the fridge. Tomorrow I break into the food we bought today, and we can get back to eating some tasty organic goodness.
