Motionless Moth

This afternoon as I was puttering around in the kitchen, I noticed the cats were entirely too quiet. Considering how loud, destructive, and basically insane they had been for the previous 12 hours, my first thought was they had finally settled down to take a nice long nap. But with these two, complete silence and disappearance does not always mean they aren’t doing something they ought not to do, so I went to check the usual napping locations.

Office chairs in the den? Nope.

Under the kitchen table? Nope.

On the bed or chest of drawers? Nope.

Illegally napping in the bedroom closet? Nope (thankfully).

Then I went into the living room, even though they never ever sleep in there when we aren’t in there with them. Ronin was curled up on the couch, and Myu was curled up on the loveseat. Odd and new behavior. As I walked further into the room, the floor squeaked and four eyes popped open simultaneously. Both of them mewed pathetically, and then their heads turned to look at the ceiling and back at me, several times. Naturally, I look up.

There on the ceiling was a large grey moth just sitting there minding his own moth business. Apparently the brats had been sitting in the living room waiting for said moth to do something more exciting than just sitting there on the ceiling, and it had taken so long they fell asleep. Though they certainly didn’t forget that moth was there, as evidenced by the fact as soon as they were awake, they immediately went right back to staring at the moth again.

I think that moth also explains their crazy behavior since last night. Lin got home a long time after night set in, and the porch light had been on for hours attracting a huge collection of flying beasties. I did my best not to let any into the house, but I must not have noticed that one. If it ever comes down off the ceiling, it will be tossed right back outside for everyone’s good. I’m sure I’ll know the moment the thing moves a leg, because the cats are still both in the living room staring at it, and it’s sitting in the exact same place it has been all day.

Well, at least the cats are being entertained and aren’t destroying anything. Thank you, motionless moth! :D
