The Haul
September 17th, 2007 - 10:18 am
Still wasn’t too much variety at the farmer’s market this weekend. We are so into the doldrums of the growing season around here right now, it isn’t even funny anymore. The summer stuff is coming to an end, but the fall and winter stuff isn’t quite coming to market yet. Lin is sick of okra, and I am sick of squash, and that means there isn’t much to choose from.
We did find these tasty looking radishes … the first we have seen this year.

Peppers are also plentiful, and so we bought some of those as well. No idea what I am going to do with so many peppers, but I am certain I will come up with something other than salads.

Behind the cut is a photo of the whole haul from this weekend, such as it is, and a bit more commentary.

You will note the okra. Lin may be sick of it, but I don’t get sick of okra. He will simply have to adapt to eating things he may be sick of. You will also note the nosy little kitty. ![]()
Tomatoes will be coming to an end sooner or later. I still haven’t decided what to do about that when it finally happens. I will miss fresh tomatoes on my salads and sandwiches, but I don’t think I can go back to eating the ones from the store. They never did taste right to me, and now that we have been eating super-tasty ‘matoes all summer long, it will be harder than ever to stomach those flavorless red things called tomatoes stacked everywhere at the local grocery store.
You want to know what I miss most though? Avocados. I haven’t had one in months. I am having withdrawal symptoms. If the last one I bought at the store hadn’t tasted so awful, I would buy some this week (locally grown be damned), but it really was awful. I’ve heard there is a vendor who grows them locally. I eagerly await finding them at the market this winter. You have no idea how eagerly I am awaitin’. ![]()
All this talk of food is making me hungry. I think I’ll go fix myself a plate of peppers, tomatoes, and roast chicken leftovers and have a (very) early lunch. Then I better get going on the housework. There isn’t much to be done, and I need to come up with something spiffy for dinner using ground pork, hamburger, and hopefully some of the plethora of peppers we currently have. ![]()
