Oh So Innocent

All I can say about Senator Larry Craig (R-Idaho), arrested in June for soliciting sex in a bathroom and pleading guilty to disorderly conduct in August, is this:
If you are too stupid to not seek the assistance of a lawyer when arrested on charges you claim you are not guilty of and then also plead guilty to lesser charges, which you also feel you are not guilty of, you are too stupid to be a senator.
Really. How stupid do you have to be?! If, say, I were arrested for felony shoplifting, of which I was not guilty, you certainly wouldn’t see me pleading guilty to a lesser charge of misdemeanor shoplifting a month later in some sort of effort to make it “go away” … because a criminal record doesn’t just go away, no matter how minor the infraction. In any event, if I were ever arrested for anything, I would acquire the services of a lawyer … as well as continue to maintain my innocence. It’s completely ridiculous to do anything other than that if you don’t agree with the charges, and if you can get a lawyer, which I would assume a U.S. senator most certainly could, why the hell wouldn’t you?
Moron. When I first heard about this, I thought he had pled guilty that same day he was arrested, so he might have gotten a bit of sympathy for being freaked out and just wanting to get on with his trip without too much hassle. Still a stupid thing to do, but perhaps a little understandable. But no, it was a month later he decided to plead guilty to disorderly conduct. How in the hell do you NOT have enough time to think about it and get a lawyer!?
Well, enough about that. Here are some links for those of you who may not know what I am babbling about.

Further proof that politicians are nothing more than mouthpieces for business, put in place to promote corporate interest disguised as public concern. In our secular society, the Senate serves a purpose analogous to that of the College of Cardinals; nouveaux riches conservatives hiding their personal lives behind a wall of authority, all the while telling the rest of us how to live.
I’ve always maintained that the Arabs hit us because they perceived Americans as a bunch of weak sisters hiding behind a contrived tough guy image and an unrealistic faith in weapon technology. It had to have been a shock for those terrorists to come here and see tens of millions of fat slob American men waddling about, especially after exposure to a steady diet of Hollywood action movies, the most popular genre exported to totalitarian countries. Then they looked at the candydancers running the show, Trent Lott, Jeff Sessions, Lindsay Graham, John Ashcroft, Denny Hastert, Alberto, little George, all those posers and dual loyalty operators in the Department of Defense, none of whom ever did anything for America. Every time another scandal like this makes the news it fuels the stereotype in the Arab world and beyond that we are indeed hypocritical or woefully naive; either way weakened as a result.
By the way, every educated person in Idaho has known about Larry Craig since day one. There just weren’t enough of them to make a difference.
I am not even phased at all anymore when these stories break. I have come to expect that everyone in Washington DC who is a politician or works for one is a hypocrite about something.
We watched a show tonight, America at a Crossroads on PBS, during which they traveled to a variety of foreign countries and discussed with normal people on the streets and educated types their feelings on the USA. It was fascinating. Horrible, because I don’t think any of the conceptions they have about America and Americans apply overly much to me or the group of people I know, but over all … disgustingly accurate. Hell, I feel that way, and I live here.

In the past few years, I can recall 1 terrorist attack on the US mainland - the twin towers - horrific as it was - just one.
This was instigated by just 20 nutters.
I’m sure in your high school, there were perhaps one or two people who were beyond reach in terms of their violence, or their extreme views. Maybe there are 200 schools in your county - maybe there are thousands of schools in your state - a great number of people - but also a tiny minority of violent/extreme people.
Would you take notice of the opinion of these extreme people? Assume that they speak for the majority?
There is no reason to label an entire creed, or religion as against you on the basis of the actions of such a small handful of people.
Again - just 20 nutters.

Sorry to be devils advocate, but if it doesn’t apply to the people you know - how do you know about the people you don’t know?
I meant people I know closely and well, friends and family. I can see the people I don’t know every time I leave my house, and it’s not hard to see what the Europeans were seeing … phones stuck to heads at all times, large numbers of overweight people pushing grocery baskets full of fattening foods, rudeness, hostility against strangers, gaping at people who are “out of the norm”, ignorance of the world around them, selfishness, and so on. Maybe these people are nice folks in their own homes and to their close friends, but you don’t see much of it when they are out and about.
And yeah, it’s wrong to label and entire group by the actions of a few crazies. It’s crazy people you have to watch out for, not particular races, creeds or nationalities. Previous to 9/11, it was crazy Americans blowing stuff up, and the recent pipe bomb scare here in Austin was done by a guy, not Muslim or Arabic, who didn’t like abortions or porn. So really, anyone can and will do stuff like that if they are both crazy enough and smart enough to pull it off.
