I don’t mention every FDA food recall, but this one I thought I should, because I have personally always bought the brand in question (on those rare occasions when I need it), and I know it’s a popular brand among my friends as well.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to eat 10 ounce cans of Castleberry’s Hot Dog Chili Sauce (UPC 3030000101), Austex Hot Dog Chili Sauce (UPC 3030099533), and Kroger Hot Dog Chili Sauce (UPC 1111083942) with “best by” dates from April 30, 2009 through May 22, 2009 due to possible botulism contamination. Botulism can be fatal. The “best by dates” can be found on the can lids.
Consumers who have any of these products or any foods made with these products should throw them away immediately. If the “best by” date is missing or unreadable consumers should throw the product out.
Castleberry has now voluntarily recalled some more of their items. I think I’d avoid any of their items or even anything similar to their items from other companies because of how the pet food recall went.
I just read that. Pretty much any company that has something recalled for something as serious as botulism is off my shopping list. I haven’t bought anything by Con Agra companies since the spinach debacle. Do you know how much stuff comes from that company?! Almost impossible to avoid.
The only good thing to come of all the recalls this year is that more people are becoming aware of the quality issues I have known about for a long time and are getting upset about it. Suddenly, I am not a lone voice shouting from the mountain anymore about how people should be able to walk into any grocery store and walk out with good, healthy, quality foods and goods. It’s a shame so many animals and people had to get sick (and die) before the majority of folks noticed.
