I Wanna Like It!

I had determined that when I went to the grocery store today, I was going to buy some Kraft Easy Mac … little single-serving, microwavable packs of mac-n-cheese. Had to have some. Wasn’t going to read the label or obsess on how I wasn’t going to buy Kraft products anymore. I was just going to toss it in my basket and press onward. Then I saw they had an organic variety of insta-mac-n-cheese by Annie’s Homegrown. I thankfully tossed that into my basket and immediately ran to the canned pasta section to see if they had the canned pastas by that company as well. I’ve been looking for them for a few weeks now. No such luck, but at least I had something I could eat for lunch or a snack that was instant and organic. Yippee!

I rushed home and put the groceries away in record time so I could sit down with a bowl of mac-n-cheese. I was nearly drooling as I put it in the microwave and waited the three minutes for the timer to ding. I mixed it up, hovered over it while it cooled enough to be put into a human mouth, and took a huge bite.

I am so sad to say I didn’t like it.

It’s really good, and it’s really good for you since it only has actual food ingredients in it, but I wish I had read the label. It has buttermilk in it. I can’t stand buttermilk. There can be a microscopic amount of buttermilk in something, and I will be able to taste it. This stuff has more than a microscopic amount of buttermilk. So that sort of ruined the joy for me.

It didn’t ruin the joy for me enough to not eat the rest of the four remaining packages this coming week, because it is good, but I don’t know that I will buy it again. I am going to try using whole milk as the liquid instead of water, in the hopes that will cover the buttermilk taste. I don’t know that it’s going to work, but it’s worth a try. I really want to like it. In fact, I want to like it so much, I might have to try making it with milk for my afternoon snack. Who knows, maybe after eating it a few times I will adapt to the buttermilk taste. That’s not likely, seeing as I have had an aversion to buttermilk my whole life, but then I did used to hate black olives and fresh tomatoes too, and now I eat them by the tons.

I read the information at their web site, and the canned pasta meals don’t have any buttermilk, so I guess my search for those will continue.

Yeah, sitting here thinking about it, if the milk-as-liquid idea doesn’t work, I can’t buy it again. I have to go brush my teeth now, because all I can taste is buttermilk. Yuck.
