Which Movie?

I have always been very selective about which movies I insist on seeing while they are in the theaters. Over the course of my life, I have tended to see two or three movies a year in the theater, mostly because it’s expensive and not always a great experience, but also because most movies are utter garbage that can be watched on late-night commercial TV without losing much quality.

Even as overly selective as I have always been about going to see movies in theaters, I have noticed that since we bought the massive TV, I am becoming even more selective. I didn’t think that was possible, but apparently it is. The simple fact is that with a giant TV and an upconverting DVD player in your living room, even my much-loved action movies can be fully enjoyed right from my couch … especially now that we once again have the Dolby system back up and running (and what a joy that has been too).

But I want to go see a movie this weekend, just to go see a movie and get out of the house on something that resembles a date. Since we have stopped going out to eat on a weekly basis (in fact, we haven’t been out to eat at all since Buffet Palace burnt down months ago), the “going out” thing has dribbled off to non-existent. While going to the farmer’s market together is sweet, I would hardly call it a date … or even fun. It’s more like “run around as quickly as possible to buy the best stuff before everyone else gets to it.” So yeah, I’d like to go out to a movie this weekend.

Looking over the selections showing at Galaxy Highland 10, the only theater I chose to go to for actual movie viewing (as opposed to move viewing with drinking and food, which we go to the Alamo for every so often), I can’t decide if I want to see the new Harry Potter, Transformers, or the new Die Hard.

I do love the Harry Potter movies, but I know we will be getting the DVD when it comes out, and I know it can be enjoyed at home just as well as in the theater. Unlike most fans, I do not have to see it the moment it comes out. I guess I am not that much of a fan. I haven’t even read all the books. Some “fan” huh? :D

I grew up with Transformers, and I know I’d get a kick out of the movie. Also, I think it’s one that would be cool to see on a big screen, though sometimes with the fast action movies, I tend to miss a lot of the action on the big screen. I don’t know that I want to buy the DVD for it at any time. My opinion on that may change, if I ever see it on sale somewhere.

Then there’s the new Die Hard movie. I didn’t see either of the first two in the theater, and I always sort of wished I had. Yes, secretly I love both those movies, because secretly I love Bruce Willis … and movies with lots of explosions and guns. ;)

So, tough call. Making it even tougher is the fact that our local Imax theater, which almost never shows anything but educational films, is showing Harry Potter. I’ve never been to an Imax theater, and I suspect this fact will be the thing that decides for me which movie we will see. Harry Potter on the big, BIG screen!

Of course, going out to see a movie this weekend depends on two things: Lin’s willingness to go see a movie and our ability to get up off our butts to do so. We’ll just have to see how that plays out. We weren’t as lazy as we’d have liked to have been last weekend, and I think we may be due a really lazy weekend of laying around doing absolutely nothing at all.

It’s funny how I know if we didn’t have the great TV and sound system in the living room right now, I’d be screaming about wanting to see all three of these movies, and Transformers would have most certainly won out. Now though, it’s like I can wait for just about any movie, because it’s so nice watching them at home with easy access to the pause button and the refrigerator.

  1. Go see HP at the IMAX. I took Hannah and Mary Elizabeth (Joe’s oldest) to the midnight showing because well, they are Potter-maniacs. It is definitely worth spending the few extra dollars and the last twenty or so minutes are in 3D for the big fight scene.

  2. You and several other people have all said the same thing, so I think the decision has been made. :D
