I just got off the phone with one of the people in my life. I was telling her about how I scored some great natural pure cane raw sugar from Mexico at Walgreens. She read me the riot act, because that sugar isn’t local, and I am all about buying my food locally, right?
Look, I am changing our eating habits and buying as much food locally, from sources I can point to on a map as I can. I am not converting to a new religion. If you think I am not going to be eating avocados year ’round or giving up the use of vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper, and lemons and limes, you are insane. And if I feel like having an Oreo, I will damn well buy some! Yes, some people go totally nuts with this localvore stuff (eating only stuff in a 100 mile radius of your home), but there is a limit to just how much I can live without, and Texas, known for many great and fresh food products, isn’t the best place for a local and varied diet all year long. The growing seasons around here are whack thanks to the always hot weather.
Hell, my grandparents lived on a farm that at the time was in the middle of nowhere, and they most certainly had vinegar and olive oil and salt and pepper and sugar and all those things you don’t find growing in Middle of Nowhere, Texas in the mid-1930′s. Sure it wasn’t always available, and they paid a premium for these things, but they damn well had them. Why sometimes, they even had ICE!
Have I ever acted like I was going to only survive on what I find at the local markets? No. When I realize I have to have something I can only get at HEB, you can bet I will drive on over there and get it! I am not an ascetic!
Though while I may not be denying myself salt and pepper, I am trying to deny myself sodas. You’d be proud of me. I walked right by the HUGE display of Dr Pepper this morning, and I didn’t even fondle any of it lovingly. I just passed it by and grabbed a large box of Lipton Green Tea bags (see, that’s not local and I am not giving up the tea too). Speaking of which, I made the ice tea yesterday with that brand of tea bags, and it was FANTASTIC!!!
I have to go get busy in the kitchen now. First I need to eat something. I am starving. Breakfast taquito anyone? :)
