Bang Bang

Another big storm is about to hit us. It looks even uglier than the one last night. I’m hoping the brunt of it skirts around us to the north, and I really wish it would just stop raining!

In other Austin news, there’s been another black guy shot by a white cop in East Austin. Someone flagged the cops down to tell them this guy had a gun. The cops track him down. He flees. One of the shoots him a few times. So far, the information I really want to know hasn’t been mentioned. Did he, in fact, have a gun? You’d think if he did, they would have mentioned that a few times to keep the situation in East Austin to a simmer. Something leads me to believe that he didn’t actually have a gun, and if that is true, East Austin is going to explode. You’d think if he had a gun, even if he didn’t point it at the cops, they’d be mentioning it as justification by now. Of course, my trust of the police department around here is somewhat lacking, so I wonder what the real story is going to end up being … or rather the real story as far as the powers that be will let us know.

Why would I think the cops involved might make shit up? The officer who pulled the trigger has made shit up before. A few years ago, he filed false reports after beating someone up, was indicted by a grand jury, and then the DA didn’t press charges. Olsen got a 60 day suspension and told to take anger management classes, even after the Chief of Police admitted his reports had contained false data … falsified to make it appear Olsen was innocent of beating up an innocent person, of course.

Interesting this should happen right before the Federal Department of Justice hits town to investigate the police department’s use of excessive force, don’t you think? Not that I trust the DOJ either at the moment, but at least someone will be pretending to look into it.

And the only story saying anything so far about the presence of a gun on the now dead suspect: Officer uses deadly force against man Sunday morning. Yeah, the cop’s lawyer says the cop found a gun. Good luck convincing the residents of East Austin of that. I can’t say I am all that convinced at the moment either, which is sad. A person should be able to trust the cops, you know?

Storm just hit. Better hit the post button before the electricity starts flickering.
