Angel Food

I turned on my favorite Sunrise Earth recording this morning … sunrise on a beach with a storm blowing in which is very relaxing. It was so relaxing, I laid down on the bed and fell asleep. It seems the Sunday Lazies can be put off but not skipped entirely for a week. Now I have the Monday Lazies. Oh well, at least my head isn’t throbbing anymore.

At the moment, I have my first ever Angel Food Cake in the oven. I have no idea how it is going to turn out. I have never even been present at the creation of an Angel Food Cake, so I don’t know what the batter should look like. It was thick and puffy and white, so I guess it will at least turn out edible. I am not, in any way, shape, or form a dessert chef. This probably ties into my general state of apathy about eating desserts. I’m just not that into sweets. If they are around, I’ll eat them, but putting in a bunch of effort to make them has never been something I have been into. This cake, it has taken a lot of effort. It better be good.

I also have two cups of fresh blackberries to make a sauce with, but what I don’t have is a strainer to get the seeds out. We may have to eat ours with seeds. I don’t really have any idea why every recipe I have found is so adamant about removing the seeds after cooking the sauce. Seems to me the very expensive blackberry preserves I was once addicted to still had the seeds in it, and I don’t remember them being particularly annoying to eat. Not that I am following any of the recipes for blackberry sauce I have read anyway. I’m just going to crush them up, add a little water, add a little sugar and a dash of lemon juice, heat them until they bubble and be done with it. In fact, I tasted one of the blackberries this morning, and they are so sweet, it almost seems a shame to do anything to them. I may just use them fresh and drizzle melted chocolate over the whole cake/fruit thing and top it off with whipped cream. I personally prefer my Angel Food Cake plain, but I have to take Lin’s preferences into account. He’s the exact polar opposite of me as far as dessert is concerned. He wants it sweet, plentiful, and piled to the ceiling with all manner of stuff. :D

I think I’ll go prep the chicken we are having for dinner tonight, and after the cake comes out, I might even go ahead and bake it since the oven is already at the right temperature. Normally I don’t precook food for dinner, but what’s the harm? None. Besides, Heroes is on TV tonight, and I always miss parts of it because I am running to the kitchen to check on food. It’d be nice to sit down and watch the whole show for once without having to check on baking chicken or whatever else it cooking.

It’s raining, and it’s supposed to be grey and icky all week. You know how I just “love” that. Ugh. This has been a really wet Spring. I shouldn’t complain, because we really need all this rain, but still … zaps my motivation to do anything other than sleep.

  1. I love Angel Food cake plain too. It can’t have any icing on it or anything else. I’ve always eaten it that way. Of course my favorite cake flavor has always been red velvet cake with cream cheese icing. Yum.
