Back-Up Food

So after examining the contents of my kitchen, there just wasn’t any human food to feed the kittens tonight. Great. I went to Walgreen’s, which is about as far as I have the energy to go today, to get what I always called my Back-up Food for Fuzza: Fancy Feast canned. Not all of them, mind you. I bought enough of the Ocean Whitefish & Tuna and Savory Salmon Feast to get them through to tomorrow afternoon. Why are these two canned foods my Back-up Foods? They contain meat by-products, which I hate feeding to my pets (who the hell knows what kind of meat it is), but they contain no grains at all and can be found just about anywhere and the cost is low. Also, I have never had a cat that wouldn’t eat them, even the two picky eaters I have now. I will just have to overlook the meat by-products, even though the whole idea grosses me out. At least the beasts have something to eat that isn’t going to kill them immediately.

And now for a moment of real outrage:

While I was at Walgreens, reading the labels to remind myself which of the Fancy Feast foods I had long ago determined to be mostly edible by cats who shouldn’t have grains, I notice some HUGE sales signs on some of the dog food. I look to see what brand it is. It was the freaking Alpo brands that are on the recall list I just looked at before going to the store! I shit you not … on SALE for 89 cents a can!!! The ones with the listed expiration dates that are to be recalled! It’s not pulled off the shelves like it should be, but sitting right there on sale so they can get rid of it and still make money! On poisoned food!!!

I pitched a fit right there. I demanded to talk to the manager. Well, the manager was out (yeah, right — no managers in the store at all, I’m not buying it), so I told the floor person what the problem was and left a note for the manager telling them that food needs to be off the shelves and not being put on sale unless they would like to see a lawsuit in their future. I’d like to go back later tonight to see if they did it, but I doubt I will make it back this evening. I will be going back tomorrow, with camera and recall list in hand, and that damn food better be off the shelves. If not, photos will be taken, and local news organizations will be notified. It’s freaking criminal enough to leave that stuff on the shelves, but to put it on sale at an altogether too low price too?! What the fuck is wrong with people?!

I have to go lay down. I’m still feeling puny and sick and all this stress about pet food is wearing on me too.

  1. I would call either your vet or the health department to report this. This store should be held criminally responsible if anything happens…

  2. I called Walgreens corporate, two news stations, the BBB, and the FDA help line for the recall. Sent a bunch of emails too. Tomorrow when I go back that food better be off the shelves.
