While I was cleaning the bathroom, I had one of those Oh Damn moments when you realize that doing A is going to create problem B. For example, removing the current shower stall and replacing it with a tub/shower unit is going to leave no place in the bathroom for the cat box. Yeah … oh damn, indeed.
I mentioned this to Lin when he called with his next bathroom brainstorm, and his suggestion was we redo the laundry room first and move the cats in there. Um. No. The laundry room, lovingly know around here as Purgatory, needs a floor, a ceiling, AC/heat vents, and well … walls, which is lacks for the most part, and with the addition of a floor at the same height as the rest of the house, the water heater will have to be moved (or replaced when it falls apart as soon as we touch it). In other words, redoing that room is going to be a monstrously huge project. I presented him with that fact and the additional facts that we spend far more time in the bathroom than in the laundry room, and that guests are far more likely to see the bathroom than the laundry room, and quite frankly it is a serious embarrassment (being old, ugly and mostly broken). So … no, I am not at all for doing the laundry room first, even if that means the cat box has to be somewhere I would rather the cat box not be for a while. It will be an excellent reminder that we need to do something about the laundry room, won’t it? :)
Lin seems terribly motivated on the bathroom project, which makes me ever so happy. Sure, it’s going to look hell-like while we are in the process of getting it all done, but at least it will look like Hell Under Construction and not Stuck In A Living Hell.
The kitties are expressing their extreme displeasure at my daring to move the laundry hamper by running around the house bouncing off walls, hissing randomly at invisible foes, and clawing open every door and cabinet they can get to (which is all of them). Perhaps I should find something to put under “their” bedroom window ASAP. I fear if I don’t, there will be no peace to be had at Casa de Orb.
::has idea and goes to test theory::
Problem solved! Two problems actually. I moved the giant, unused stereo speakers that have been taking up space in the hall since we got the new TV to the space under the bedroom window. I had to move the two guitars and keyboard that were also sitting there to make room for them, but they are the perfect height and more than enough room for two cats to laze around under the window … which both of them are doing right now. Phew.
I agree with the cats that the laundry hamper is a right fit in the bathroom, but I am attempting to break the other mostly hairless mammal in the house (Lin) of the bad habit of tossing his dirty clothes on the floor. I’m trying to make it as easy as possible for him to not do so. Besides, it makes a great place to stack my bathroom reading material.
And I need a new hamper too. Would you like to know how old my laundry hamper is? It’s the first one my parents bought when they got married in 1958, and they weren’t rich when they bought it, so it was probably the cheapest one available. Crazy, yes? I think I’ll go page through the IKEA catalog and see what they have in the way of cheap replacements. First I have to regain enough energy to move my butt from den to living room. Carrying those 30 pound each speakers from the hall to the bedroom took the absolute last drops of my energy. I think I need a nap now.
