Lost Skills

Proof that people are becoming entirely too dependent on computers for organizing things, I read a question today about how to “tag” a large stack of papers to find the information within easily. Do people really not know how to work with paper anymore? Yes, what did we do before we had computers?!

Well, in the past, when I have had reams of information on paper that needed to be organized in such a way so I could find exactly what I am looking for, I have chosen one of two worthy paths. Either I made an index, just like in a book, which is time-consuming by hand but well worth it, or I used little vinyl tabs onto which I could write anything I wanted (or even color code them). Obviously, of the two methods, indexing is going to take a whole lot more time, but it allows you to be intricately thorough. I prefer using tabs, because they are quick, easy, and I can put as many tabs on a page/section as I need. Neither approach is particularly difficult, but both are going to be more time consuming than typing a “tag” into an text box on your computer and hitting enter.

I just think it’s pathetic that people are losing the skills required to deal with information actually printed on paper. I look forward to the coming apocalypse, after which my antiquated skills will obviously be in much demand as everyone runs around freaking out without electricity and computers to make their lives perfect and easily maintained.
