Cold SNAP!

Temperature on my front porch: 35 degrees Fahrenheit
Windchill: 25 degrees Fahrenheit
Wind Speed: 9 mph with 25 mph gusts
Humidity: 70%

Winter just bit Texas in the ass.

There might have been ice this morning. I don’t know. I got up and made coffee, and then the cats and I proceeded directly back to the bed to create a nice warm pile of human, comforter and fur. I can hear some of you up north saying “It’s colder here! Get over it!” Yes, but was it 80 degrees yesterday afternoon? Was it 75 degrees at midnight last night? There is nothing worse than a 35-40 degree drop in temperature over the course of a few hours. That sort of thing is impossible to adapt to, and it’s the only thing about Texas weather I actually hate. Hot as hell one day. Freezing cold a few hours later. ARGH! My gods, it’s freaking cold! I hate winter, and we have definitely entered our one month of real winter.

Oh well, at least I’ll get to wear my leather jacket for a while. I almost never get to wear my biker jacket. It’s just too heavy. I remember when I got it, I thought that after a decade or so, I’d have a nice broken in, worn-looking jacket. The damn thing still looks almost as new as the day I opened the box and put it on for the first time. :D

I’m going to make me some nice hot spiced tea, layer on some more clothing, crank the furnace to high, and try to resist the urge to crawl back into bed with my two furry personal heaters. Brrrr …

  1. There was freezing rain, well mist, yesterday morning too. Not much, but you could feel it if you were outside. I figure this is just one of those temporary cold snaps. It will warm up again fairly soon. We’ll probably even have 80 degree weather for Christmas … again. February is typically our month for winter. Something to look forward to … well perhaps not since I don’t really like the cold either.

  2. I meant to look outside yesterday when I was making coffee to see what was going on weather-wise, but the fact the bed would still be warm if I hurried back to it made me hurry back to it. I’d turned the furnace on when I went to bed, but obviously not high enough. It was downright FRIGID in the house. Looking outside didn’t seem as important as getting WARM. :D

February is always nasty and cold. Just in time for my birthday. I can’t even remember the last time it wasn’t wet and freezing on my birthday. And people wonder why I never want to go out to celebrate? Because it’s COLD AND YUCKY! Much better to buy a bottle of wine, order take-out, and rent a movie or two.

Our first February in the house, I woke up to snow on Valentine’s Day. Well, what we call snow here. I’m sure Yankees would say it was nothing like snow, but you know what I mean. It’s the closest thing we get, right? That was pretty fun, but then my birthday that year was freezing rain and sub-freezing temps. Why did I have to be a winter baby?!
