Thanksgiving Goodness

One small victory for Orb. Thanksgiving will be held at MY house. Yippee!!!
I know I probably shouldn’t be all that excited about it. That means I am going to have to do all the cooking in my small stuffy kitchen, and Mom is bringing her yappy little dog, which I am just SURE the kittens are going to just LOVE (and they are staying for a few days too). So, I probably shouldn’t be excited about it, but I sure am. In all our years together, we have only spent one Thanksgiving in our own domicile, and that year it was only because we didn’t have a car (or a phone, or cable, or anything else normal people usually have — yes, the early and lean years). Finally I get to host something family related at my house!
I think I’ll be doing a whole turkey. Yes, you heard me right … a whole turkey. I haven’t done one of those since that year we had no way to go anywhere, and I want to do it. So what if we’ll be eating turkey for two weeks! ![]()
Wow, I think I am actually looking forward to a family holiday. How cool is that? And … Mom wants to go to IKEA too, so we will likely be joining the masses of humans who will be there the day after Thanksgiving. It’ll be crazy, but it’ll be fun too! Five and a half football fields of cool housewares you can buy! EEEEE! I can’t wait for that either!
OK, now that I have expressed my excitement about Thanksgiving, I better go tend to tonight’s dinner and update my shopping list with Thanksgiving goodies. The works, I say … we are having THE WORKS for Thanksgiving! ![]()

It is very good to hear you excited about a holiday!!
Finally, right?
Way to go! We know that feeling well. It always takes the child-free longer to earn these rites of adulthood. Ah, but now you have it.
Do you have traditions around “Large-dead-bird?” Does Lin have to clean it, stuff it and truss it, then carve it at the table? My father never did anything in the kitchen, except Sunday fried breakfast and turkey time. If you don’t have a traditional family dressing (stuffing) or you want to start one, I’m sure Janno would be honoured to share her recipe. I swear to all the gods, nothing this good ever came out of turkey before –the only stuffing I’d ever consider eating.
Ah, you are cooking and painting and writing again — it’s like having Orbbo back — something we are all thankful for.
It does take longer! I’ve only be squeaking about wanting to have at least my parents over for the holiday for ages now. I think the tide turned when I reminded my mom that we aren’t spring chickens anymore ourselves, and the getting up early, long drives on cold days, and general energy requirements of traveling somewhere for a one day holiday made us tired and our bones ache too. Or it could be that it has been determined that I am the one most likely to die soon, because where family gatherings are held in my family seems to be determined by that as well.
We have no traditions at all. None. While my family has always been big on getting together that day and gorging themselves on traditional American Thanksgiving foods, I’m pretty sure I never saw a single whole turkey while I was growing up. I have a theory that the use of instant and easy versions of all the required foodstuffs in my family is a direct result of the hosting house being chosen by who’s the sickest and most feeble as mentioned above. When you have someone sick or elderly in your home, do you really want to bother with extensive cooking? Nope. Enter the turkey roast, canned ham, and instant stuffing. So yeah, no stuffing recipes here!
I’d love to have Janno’s recipe, by the way. I wouldn’t even know where to start with stuffing.
And the men in my family have never seen the inside of the kitchen. Once upon a time, Lin could cook. I’m not so sure he’d even be willing (or know how) to clean and truss a turkey. LOL! No, the men’s job is to sit in the living room, smoking and having some sipping beverage containing some form of alcohol and talking about manly things. The women gather in the kitchen where they all watch the hostess working her butt off and gossiping (or complaining). Wait! The men also watched the kids. Or rather, the kids were in the same room as the men doing whatever they wanted so long as they did it quietly and didn’t break anything.
Since my grandparents died though, we haven’t had many full family gathering for Turkey Day. It’s broken down to oldest family member and their kids (and any grandkids they can con into it) at their own houses. So it’s just going to be the three of us, which is cool. My plan is to take tons of photos and videos, and show them off at Xmas to demonstrate just how much fun could be had at Orb’s house for a holiday. I’m telling you … next year I get Xmas and the whole family. Just once at least, please.
Yeah, I’m feeling more myself these days and feeling better health-wise. It’s hard to do anything when you feel like crud every day, and I finally don’t feel like crud every day. It’s good to be back.
Hey Orb,
I aced all the tests! Until next year at least. Thanks for pulling for me!
It is so good that your Spirits are looking over you in a good way. I share in your excitement. It helps to be in good Spirits in regard to all, but especially with artistic endeavors.
Two pounds of hand picked, hand shelled, and hand cleaned Texas Native Pecans are on their way to you. If you don’t use the whole two pounds Pecans will stay good for up to a year in the freezer. Post lady said they should arrive at your place on Friday or Saturday.
One of my favorite ways to eat them is as follows.
Take about a quarter pound of Pecans, place in skillet, use just enough butter ( or oil of your choice ) to evenly coat the Pecans, and fry on less than medium heat until golden brown. Stir often as they will burn easy. Half way through salt to taste. You may have to experiment with how well or not so well done you prefer them. I like mine well done. This is an old recipe that comes from my NA family who at one time used an open wood fire, a flat rock, and animal fat. The wood fire gave them an extra flavor to die for.
I also have one for spiced Pecans as well that I will send.
Since this will be an extra special Thanksgiving event for you/family use as many Pecans as you need. If you run out let me know and I will send more. We can do an Indian trade. Next time you make some soap send me a sample. Enjoy Orb!! You really deserve one for a change.
So glad to hear the good news! Can’t wait to get the pecans. I’ve never tried them the way you suggest. I’m always using them in other things, or when I want a quick snack straight out of the freezer and into my mouth.
December is soap month. I’ve put you on the list.
Way to go Wildman!
(Mental note: get extra pecans for roasting on Sunday! Have I even seen pecans here? Ah, there they are, $43.50/kg)
(Mental Note: become pecan smuggler)
Thanks Orb and Kenno! Two yrs ago I took one those Nuclear Stress tests and ended up in the hospital on Thanksgiving day with them poking around in my ticker. Ever since then the tests are highly dreaded. My dad at age 50 died in my arms from a massive heart attack in 1980. So far I have managed to outlive him by 6 yrs. A lot for me to be Thankful this Thanksgiving.
Kenno would there be anyway I could send you some Pecans in the mail?
